Solved EW problem, now a new problem has developed
« on: October 19, 2010, 18:00:19 pm »
I keep losing my posts for some reason so I'm going to try to type quickly to get my story down before it disappears again!

My daughter's been doing well lately waking at 6:30, napping for almost 2 hours from 12:30 to 2:30 and sleeping at around 7:30 or 7:45. This is a big improvement from where we were with early wakings and only 12 to 12.5 hours of sleep in a 24 hour period. The change was caused by pushing her nap to later in the day and by shortening her A time before bed. I have been greatly relieved and surprised that it has worked out as well as it has!

In any case, here is the current problem. On Sunday, she completely refused to nap. After an hour of playing in her crib she finally called for me and eventually starting crying hard until I went and got her. I thought that maybe she refused the nap because she got a little more sleep the night before than usual. But today, a similar thing happened. Instead of falling asleep within 15 minutes, which has been her norm for the past several weeks, she was still awake a half an hour after going into her crib. Finally she fell asleep at 12:55 (she's usually asleep by 12:30).

Can someone explain why this might be happening and suggest a solution? I'm assumiing that I need to push her nap a little later, but how much later? And then what happens with her bedtime? Do I push that later as well? Any advice would be appreciated!!!

BTW, my daughter will be 23 months old next week.

Thanks for reading!!

I just tried to take a peek and she almost bit my finger off. But I didn't notice anything really obvious. What other signs of teething would there be? She did have a mysterious rash last night on her legs, and she has a sty on her eyelid (dr said this morning it is not pink eye). So it's certainly feasible she's not feeling 100 percent well. But I wouldn't say her behavior is too unusual, other than the sleep thing I described.

So let's say it's NOT teething. Could it be that her nap needs to be pushed back? and if it is teething, what then? take her out of her room if she is sitting there for too long for naptime and then put her to bed early?

Thanks, ladies!!

i can't say for sure - it seems like teeth or some other physical something (so tweaking may not help in this case) but if you were going to tweak i would start by moving that nap to 5.5 hrs after wake time for a few days, just to see if she is OT and you are missing her sleep window.  could be temporary, related to some teeth (2yr molars i assume) movement and you will e back to 12:30 nap time in a week.

i doubt she is ready to give up napping, and if the nap needed to be capped you would see trouble putting her down at night or NW or EW - but if she is strugging to fall asleep it is either discomfort or a tweak in the A time i think......

a rash can be indicative of teething for sure.  also general malaise is often part of it, or if she is a bit clingy or grumpy (or even showing a big developmental leap).....  in any event, i wouldn't take her out for the naptime period.  in my experience, if i took them out they figured they could call out and i would come and get them, even when they did need to sleep.  so sleep time was for quiet in their beds (and i insisted on that using wiwo) even if they didnt' sleep.  when we would get over the hump and be back to normal napping, we hadn't created a habit of not staying in bed iyswim?

My husband felt for signs of teething tonight and couldn't feel anything, so I can't figure out what's going on. (still could be teething, of course, but if it is, it's not obvious) I'm sure she is going through developmental leaps right now (she took the initiative to pee on her potty for the very first time this morning, for example) but I don't know that that can explain the nap issues. I don't think the cause of the nap problem is overtiredness because the routine we've been on has been working successfully for about a month now, and she's been getting more sleep now overall than she'd been getting for a long time prior.

She ended up sleeping 2 hours for her nap today, by the way. (from 12:55 to 2:55) Yet she had no problem falling asleep at her usual time (between 7:30 and 7:45)

Maybe I'll get lucky and this will turn out to have been a fluke. I can't stand when the going finally gets good and yet another sleep issue rears its head!

Thanks very much for sharing your thoughts, Cherie!
