Extending nap using paci?
« on: October 20, 2010, 21:17:32 pm »
Hello everyone, I am trying to lengthen my almost 4-month old's naps.  He wakes up after 45 mins--- the end of a sleep cycle.  On top of that, we are changing to a 4-hour routine.  This seems to be going well, as he can last almost 4 hours b/w feeds.  He sleeps great at night--- 11-12 hours with a dream feed around 11ish.  He is a touchy, ultra alert baby who notices everything in his environment and seems to tire easily.  When he wakes after 45 mins, I know he is still tired.  So I go in, and calm him.  He will calm most of the time while in the crib, but sometimes needs to be picked up.  The best way to calm him is to use a paci, reassuring pattting, and a gentle voice.  He will then fall asleep, and stay asleep when the paci falls out--- but then, sometimes, after 5-10 minutes he will squirm, wake himself back up--- and his eyes will pop open and he will be wide awake.  I was concerned he had reflux, so he was on Zantac.  But that made him very constipated, and so I stopped it.  But now he is back to short naps.  Today, I did pick up/put down with him using a paci and a calming voice and patting, and he had 2, 2 hour naps, but lots of help from me.  It is just hard to do---- because I have a 2-year-old as well who needs my time and attention.  I am not sure if the paci is a prop or what----  Anyone out there use a paci with pick up/put down?  I have read both of Tracy's books over and over about pacis, and she seems to say it is okay if it doesn't become a prop.  Thank-you to all of you fellow baby whisperers!!!  This stuff does work!  I used it with my 2-year old and he is a great sleeper and loves life!!!

I used a paci to extend naps but would have replaced it at 35-40 minutes and sshed-patted until settled rather than wait until she woke and it worked well and didn't become a prop.

I would worry if the short naps starting again coincides with you stopping the reflux meds.  Waking at 45 mins can be a sign that reflux is bothering a LO.  When they come into that light sleep part of the sleep cycle the reflux bothers them and they can't resettle without help.  PU/PD can also aggravate reflux.

Thank-you so much!!  That helps a lot.  I will try the wake-to-sleep method.  It is SOOOOOO encouraging to hear you used a paci, too, and it didn't become a prop.  He just loves his paci.  I put him back on Zantac today.  If he gets constipated, my doctor wants me to start a little bit of prunes--- I was hesitant b/c I wanted to wait until 6 months, but now with the nap issues, I'll see what happens.  I really appreciate your help!!!  Thank-you again.
