Weaning a 14 month old from napping on pushchair
« on: October 27, 2010, 13:38:26 pm »
Hi all.

I posted on here a couple of months ago with EW problems which are now (I don't say this too loudly in case she decides to change it) solved thanks to some wonderful advice. I even managed to wean her from falling asleep at the breast and she's now happily going to sleep independently at night with 11-12h sleep (this said very quietly too!). She's even cutting molars and canines but seems alright most nights apart from some sporadic separation anxiety-pain from teething at bedtime.

Her routine is pretty much

Up at 7am
Nap at 10am (lasts 50min if lucky)
Lunch at 12
Second nap at 2pm (about same length as the morning one)
Dinner at 5.30pm
Bed by 7pm

I think her naps are too short either because she doesn't really need that much sleep through the day OR she's not comfortable where she naps ie. a pushchair. This is utter AP from us due to lots and lots of travelling earlier this year and now we don't seem to dare put her down for a nap in the cot. However, I know this needs to stop and I don't really know how to tackle the issue. I guess she is so not going to like it and scream and I wonder whether WIWO will help (that's how i sorted out the bedtime) and whether the timing is right for this as we are in the process of moving to another area in Scotland.

Any advice welcome!!

hi~
i do think your lo may be getting enough sleep at night and therefore only needs short naps.  my lo is the same age and needs 10.5 at night and 1.5-1.75 during the day total.  but everyone is different.  if your lo is in good spirits they are probably getting enough sleep.
to wean for naps.  i did gw since that was easiest for my situation but if you have done wiwo before with success, your lo knows the routine and would likely catch on much easier.  you can do it now and may have a time or two when you move to readjust but have found it is much easier for them to get the hang of it the second time around.
hope this helps...someone will likely follow with some good words of wisdom.

Hi, thanks for the quick response!

I'm not sure what gw stands for. wiwo worked fine although it took a whole week for her to find the way to sleep independently but hopefully it can make the difference again.

It's funny that i'm so apprehensive when she's so happy sleeping in her cot at night, it should be easy getting her to nap there too! Just not looking forward to nap-less days and tears i guess...*sigh*

Anyway thanks again!

gw is gradual withdrawl but i would stick to wiwo if that has worked before.  she'll probably get the hang of it quicker.  i do think it is harder to nap train than train at night.  it has to do with the 4 biological systems at work during the day that allows them to be sleepy and then rebound but at night they eventually get so tired they have to fall asleep (unless something is wrong).  but if you hang with it and she still needs her naps they should come back in a couple of days.  you have to be tough for a few days & i know it really makes for some long evenings but you can do it.....  just hang in there!
