Does preschool necessary for a 2 year old ?
« on: October 27, 2010, 14:23:11 pm »
Hi everyone,

Lately lots of friends and relatives asking whether I would enroll a preschool for our 2 yo DS. In my country ( Indonesia ) it is common even for a stay at home mom to enroll their LO to a daycare or preschool.

Currently DS attending a 45 minutes Gymboree class once in a week. Personally I dont feel like he needs to joint preschool so early ( maybe wait until he is 3 years old ). Im a stay at home mom and have plenty of time taking care of DS.

I wonder whether it is really necessary for a 2 year old to attend a preschool. Anyone has some advices ?

Thanks !

i really think this is a personal thing and lots of moms will have different thoughts on this depending on the child.

for us, DS and DD didn't need preschool that early.  as you said, i was here and able to take care of them (and frankly here it is expensive and where i am at home it didn't seem a necessary expense).  looking at them i could see they interacted well with other children, they had a good measurable set of 2 yr old skills and were happy most of the time.  we decided this year to enroll them because they seemed ready for something more - the days were harder to keep them entertained and they were asking to go to school (something they heard about from older friends).  they are excelling at 2 mornings a week and could probably do more, but with that i am comfortable having them with me the rest of the time.   i figure there is plenty of tiem for school later on!!

Well I think that preschool is not necessary for a 2 year old.  He is learning a lot from you and you are his best teacher.  I see no need at all for you to enroll him and that you are doing a wonderful thing for him by staying at home with him.  I'm of the thinking that all the socialization they need at this age they can learn from you and family.  Now I'm all for playgroups and getting together with others and I'm all for preschool later on but I really feel like you staying at home with him is doing more good than if you were to enroll him.
