'active alert' phase vs overtiredness? (newborn)
« on: October 31, 2010, 20:11:38 pm »
Hi, I've heard that the optimum learning time for newborns (or babies in general) is when they're in the 'quiet alert' phase of wakefulness, but that they also go through 'active alert' phases. I think I'm having trouble distinguishing this latter with overtired flailing of limbs etc and sometimes trying to get my 5 week old down for his nap too early? Anyone got any info on what to expect during wake times re these two states? Or does 'active alert' just mean crying etc?! Do they alternate between the two and then get tired, or is 'active alertness' sometimes the first sign of tiredness?

At this young age, their A time is so very short - 'active alert' may only last as long as their feed before they need to go back down for their nap. It's really difficult to put a 5 week old down too early, as they can really only manage 60-75mins max awake - far more likely for them to get OT.
