18 mo 90 min naps - Why??? UT? OT? Not sick, not teething
« on: November 08, 2010, 19:04:57 pm »
Hi everyone,

My 18 mo son will only nap for 90 min which is not enough for him. He's not teething and is not sick. Do I need to adjust A time? How? Here is a typical day. A couple of weeks ago he was napping consistently for 2-2.5hrs with this same schedule. I'm so frustrated and would love some input. Thank you!

6:30 awake
11:30 asleep for nap
1:00 awake
7:00 asleep for bed

I should add he's waking at night and starting to have EW and is super cranky with this amount of napping. Otherwise there wouldn't be a problem...

They have a bit of a wonky moment around 18mths old.  I think your routine before is still quite good, 11.5hrs at night and 1.5hr nap in the day. However if he seems OT then I would bring bedtime forward by 30mins for a couple of nights to catch him up BUT then push his nap back a tad.

I was thinking you might want to try pushing the nap to 12 and see if that brings the 2 hour nap back...

Thanks so much for your replies. Is 1.5 hours generally sufficient at 18 months? In the past he has been on the higher end of sleep needs for his age...Is more than 5 hours activity time typical for 18 mo? Thanks again.

It can be BUT as you said he's on the higher end of sleep needs then it's probably not enough.

I think a lot of 18mth olds do 5.5hrs - def worth a shot.

18 mth olds gone a bit crazy sometimes, I'd try the longer A but he may settle back down shortly.  If the longer A doesn't do it, try shorter, could be OT.  Also, try some pain meds, eyeteeth hurt like crazy and often come in at that age.
