Night nursing - GS or Supply Issue? Both?
« on: November 08, 2010, 20:03:02 pm »
6mo EBF DD was making huge progress on STTN between 5-6mo.  She was stretching out to 7, 8, 9, and once she even did 10 hours at night!

About a week ago she started waking up hungry 2-3 times every night, anywhere from 2-5 hours apart.  I thought maybe it was the 6mo growth spurt and tried feeding her more often during the day.  She is taking the extra feeds and draining both breasts, but she is still waking up 2-3 times at night, and she is definitely hungry.  She's also finishing each breast faster, sometimes in only 3 minutes!

It's very hard for me to tell by feel whether my breasts are full are empty.  Generally what I do is right when she finishes I hand express milk into a cloth.  If there is a strong spray, then I know there is still milk in that breast.  If there is no spray at all and only a little milk comes out and forms a drop on my nipple, then I know that breast is mostly empty.  Does that seem like an okay way to tell?

We were on a loose 4 hr EASY but now I am nursing her 30 min before naps, as well.  Can anyone suggest any strategies for me to follow for the next few days?  Keep nursing every 2 hours?  Do a yield once a day?  Try pushing her back out to 4 hrs during the day?  Any advice would be much appreciated!

TIA,
Maria

There is a 6mo growth spurt, so that could definitely be throwing a wrench into things!

I'm just on my iPod so I can't reply properly, but this will bump your post up so some other moms will see and hopefully have some thoughts for you! I will check in when I eg on my proper computer tomorrow too :)

Hey,

How's it going now? Didn't see this post earlier... It does sound like a GS to me, so I would feed more in the day and also feed at night at this point and see if it gets back to 'normal' again by itself. Another question that popped into my mind is have you started any solids? Sometimes the introduction of solids can throw a spanner in and make them wake more at night as they get used to it.

Thanks both for your responses!  I did start feeding more often during the day and, although it didn't seem to help much with the hungry night wakings, things did even out after about a week and a half.  She is now consistently sleeping 8 hours her first stretch, then nursing and going back down for another 4 - perfect 12 hour night!

And, good call on the solids.  We had started oatmeal about 3-4 weeks ago and now she wants to eat EVERYTHING I do!

Thanks again for responding!
