Ideas needed for keeping LO warm
« on: November 09, 2010, 22:32:44 pm »
I have two problems that are forcing me to change my previous strategies in this department.  First, last winter, I put DS in a onesie (short-sleeve, snaps at the crotch) and a fleece sleeper (long-sleeve, footed, zips from ankle to neck).  He is now just barely fitting into the largest size onesie (24mths) so I've been putting him in just the fleece sleeper.  That seems to keep him warm enough, but it isn't really that cold at night yet, and we've been keeping the heat set at 65* just in case.

Cue my second problem.  We recently moved DS into a different (bigger) room that just so happens to be right next to the furnace closet.  We have discovered that the furnace kicking on is loud enough to wake DS even with white noise in his room, and of course this happens at about 5AM.

I would love to be able to keep the heat off until we are up, both to save energy and to help DS stay asleep until 6:40.  But I don't know how to keep him warm enough.  Any ideas on keeping him warm or anything else that might solve our EW?

What about an undershirt and fleece jammies in a sleepsac?

Depending on how cold it is could you fit normal pj's and socks under his fleece suit?

We did a pair of thermal jammies and socks under a warm sleeper (Carters make some that are super warm, but dont actually look all that warm, I think they may be micro fleece or something simular)

Also, in our house we only have one heat vent that goes upstairs, so we shut the heat off at night since it does not make any difference anyways.  I bought a little oil heater for the hall way that is super energy effecient and heats just enough areas for the kids to be warm.  I only use it when it is super cold or DS refuses to were any jammies (which is often now since his daddy only wears shorts and he wants to be just like him  ;))

I agree with pp. An undershirt or thermal "long john" style PJs under the fleecy ones. Socks under the feetsy PJs as well.

Use a space heater OR set the heat to kick on earlier. This helped with DD as she was in a heavier sleep stage at say 4am rather than heading into the light sleep phase as morning approached near 5am. This def. helped us last year. Might just do the trick.

The Halo brand sleepsacks are very warm and go up to 4/5T toddler size.  Also, what about using a humidifier in teh room?  That keeps our babies room much warmer and helps the nose in the winter too.  We also used those oil heaters last year in their rooms, they are pretty safe but the box does say not to use unattended.

I am hesitant to use a sleep sack simply because he's never had one and I'm not sure how he would take it :)  I never thought of the long johns idea, though.  See that's why we need each other :)

Setting the heat to go on earlier is what I had intended, but it's the cycling on and off once it's on that wakes him.  I think he probably thinks it's us making all the noise and just wants to be part of the party.

Just out of curiosity, how many of your LOs use covers at night.   And how do I teach him to keep them on?  Eventually he will need them, right?

My 4 year old still struggles with covers, its almost like she has an instinct to kick them off.  My son is about the same age as yours and I think we'll be moving to fluffy footy pj's soon.  The Fall weather he would sweat as he went to bed then wake up cold.  But most of my friends are already using them with their LOs (I wonder what they'll do when it gets even more cold).  We've put a heater that cycles on and off in the hallway to keep the entire upstairs warm for them both.  You can find safe ones and it isn't as costly as our gas furnace.

My 3.5 yr old also struggles with her blanket and I think sheis cold many nights but refuses anything extra.  It may be tough to go to a sack at this age but I know Carters makes the fleece sleepers all the way up to kids sizes, don't know why I forgot to mention that before.  That sounds like the perfect solution and they are very warm.

We have an oiled filled radiator (you plug it in) on a timer - comes on in DS's room in early hours, just enough to take the chill off.

It's really the pits when your lovely 2 year old undresses herself when put to bed and falls asleep in just her pull-up....then wakes at night b/c she is cold. Grrrrr. Yep that was us last night.

Stan learned to cover himself with his  blanket right before he turned 2. We did lots of practice.

Sorry, Nicole, but that's hilarious :)  Thankfully she still had the pull-up on  :o

Anna, that gives me hope.  Though he doesn't seem to like practicing much.  He usually just wants "out, out, out" of his crib :)  Yesterday, he fell asleep with his head at the foot of the crib and on top of the comforter.

I swear by sleeping bags especially as DS#1 always kicked the covers off and woke up because he was cold.

I've had 3 (in different togs) from this company (they even delivered to me here in Greece ;D) and they've been fab and I'm using them for DS#2 now

Yeah the Carter sleepers are amazing and not bulky or anything.  Thye go up to size like 7 or 8 I think.  Just got DS some size 4 ones.

Also DS started around 20 months to use his covers as he saw fit  ;)  I would cover him up and he would kick them off then 10 min later I would check and he is all the way under them.
