Peas or apples? Can they cause a reaction?
« on: November 10, 2010, 18:19:15 pm »
Hi everyone

My 5 month old DD has had 3 mucousy runny poos today. Can it be caused by peas or apples? That's the only foods she took in the last 2 days. Only peas yesterday and no reaction, a tiny bit of apple today and no sleep, grunting noises, diarrhea with mucous :( I always thought mucous in poo would mean milk intolerance and food reaction would be a rash?

Thank you in advance :)

Yep - you can have a reaction to anything! and symptoms don't depend on what the offending thing is, rather how your body is reacting to it.  Grapes give my ds mucousy poops, but his milk allergy gives him instant hives. And it can take time for symptoms of a reaction to appear - minutes, hours, even longer. Has she been exposed to either peas or apples before this? Or was this the first time for both?

It was the first time for both. She has only tried pears, carrots, peas and apple so far. Only pear went well, she hated carrots and peas :( that's why I only gave peas for 2 days, and now not sure if it's them causing a reaction, or apple, which she had just a spoonful of, I used it to mix her Omeprazole in it

Should I just stop them and try something new?

With them being given so close together it's hard to know which one is causing the reaction.  I was *lucky* in that Dylan's reactions were pretty instantaneous - other than the grapes (which did take me a bit to figure out) he gets instant hives/swelling.  But for those delayed reactions the 3 day rule is a lifesaver.  Even delayed reactions will show up within about 3 days.  Even if she hates a food, if she ingested some of it I would wait before introducing another new food, kwim?  But that's just MHO and it's definitely coloured by Dylan having multiple food allergies, and I know that some moms are much more lenient without troubles.

I would stop them both (which won't be a big deal with the peas anyway! ;)) and wait until her poo gets back to normal.  You could try the apples again and see what happens, then you'll know!

I'd back off on the apples first. They are high in sugars and salicylates, both of which can cause different reactions but reactions nonetheless.

Sweet potatoes are good, so are squash and carrots :)

Good luck!

My LO is intolerant to salicylates and gets mucus poos from them.  Apples contain "high" amounts, peas contain "moderate" amounts.    Carrots and sweet potatoes contain moderate amounts.   My LO can't tolerate moderates yet, only "lows"

Basically, low salicylate fruits and veges are ripe peeled pears , peeled white potatoes, mung beans, bean sprouts, brussel sprouts, cabbage, celery.

Stone fruits, citrus, berries are "high" to "very high", which contain 10 and 100 times the amount of salicylates found in "low" foods.

I can point you to information about following a low salicylate diet if interested, just let me know.

Hi Eloise

Thank you for your response, it actually makes sense and I would like to read up more on that

At the moment she is fine with pears and sweet potatoes, unfortunately she won't eat other veg, and carrots constipate her :(  I am trying not to stress too much about it since she is not quite 6 months yet but at the same time I don't know what and when to feed her, and how to get her to eat veg. She will eat oatmeal though lots of it!
