letdown help
« on: November 13, 2010, 16:33:55 pm »
Hi!  I am wondering if anyone has any unusual tips for stimulating let-down?  I have tried all the usual ones.

I have started back to work part time and am pumping at work.  The first couple of weeks I got 4-5 oz per session but now I am getting 2-3 oz and let-down is taking a while and not lasting very long.

Even when nursing my son directly let-down can take up to 2 minutes and he gets quite impatient.

I have tried imaging my son, looking at a photo, meditation, visualization of milk flowing or opening a tap, massage, nipple stimulation, jiggling my breast, drinking a hot drink before, taking fennel tea, nursing tea... I think that is most.

any new suggestions?

Have you tried not doing any of that at all?  I know that sounds strange, since you're doing all of the *right* things - but some moms have better luck when they're completely distracted by something else.  So maybe watch TV, or read a book, surf the web, etc?

Also, and I don't want to discourage you, but many moms (myself included) find that the older their lo gets, the harder it is to pump anything.  It's like our breasts get smarter and they know the difference between baby and pump!  For me it happened right around 16mo, and I went from being able to pump a decent feed to struggling for every drop :(  TBH, I'm not sure how to overcome that.  Because of Dylan's age I just weaned him onto soy milk for the day feeds that I missed and just kept nursing him at bedtime.

Hopefully some other moms will jump on with tips for you too!!

After my DD was about 10 months I had a really hard time getting letdown for pumping.  Eventually I gave up with pumping, now she is old enough for milk so when I am not around she gets goat's milk.
While I was still able to pump, for some reason watching TV made it happen!

lol! Okay, I will try TV!! lol

I really don't want to wean my LO just because I am going back to work.  I would almost quit work in order to keep up breastfeeding.  Does it still work if you only nurse morning and night?  Can you drop it to that little without losing milk completely?

Absolutely! We carried on with just the bedtime feed from about 16mo until just recently! :)

I have been doing 2 feeds a day for the last month and it has been fine.  And if I am out for the evening, since I don't pump anymore, whoever is babysitting just gives DD a sippy cup with milk in it.  I also offer it to her the same way before naps, so it is a normal routine for her.
