If your LO is on rice milk....
« on: November 13, 2010, 20:26:29 pm »
what and how much, do you give you make sure they have enough fats? DS has a fairly balanced diet (for a toddler  :P) and I have been giving him fish oil supplements and flaxseed oil, but I am worried that may not be enough. And do you give anything else to help calcium intake? He hasn't been taking much milk lately.

We do soy milk rather than rice (Dylan is allergic to dairy) but have the same low fat problem. Some ideas:
- avocado (full of great fats)
- cook with oils (I use olive)
- use coconut oil (solid) in cooking and baking, coconut milk too
- dark meat poultry, well marbled red meats

Hth, and looking forward to hearing other ideas too! :)

we use calcium enriched rice milk and also give a calcium suppliment "calsource" (can get it on presecription in NZ so pretty cheap) it's a lemon flavoured efferecent tablet (we give it with her vitamin and mineral powder mixed in as well)  AG calls it her "po-pot" (potion)! :-)

Thanks everyone! He is MPI, so is dairy free. Our rice milk is calcium enriched as well, but he has only been drinking about 6oz a day, so not nearly enough. I have been giving a liquid calcium supplement, but I am thinking I may give him a bit more than I have been. I've been using olive oil, but I think I am going to start using coconut oil, and giving avocado more often. Haven't been able to find coconut milk.  :(

You should be able to find coconut milk rather easily at Whole Foods or even at a regular grocery store (canned stuff in the Asian food section). My SIL used to put 1-2 ounces coconut milk into 6-7 ounces rice milk. Most commonly she'd use a can of coconut milk (generally 12 ounces I think) and mix it with the desired amount of rice milk and keep it in a pitcher in her fridge. Then she just shook and poured how much she wanted into her LOs bottle or cup.

Coconut oil is great for cooking in - you can even start slowly by using half olive oil (or butter) and half coconut oil. Will he eat guacamole?

We do not have a Whole Foods, and our grocery store is small enough that there is not an Asian section. I will look for it when we go into the city, and try your idea. Thanks!

I'm not sure about the guacamole - I haven't tried it. I just give him part of an avocado.

I know it is different in different countries but our dietician said not to give rice milk due to levels of inorganic arsenic found in it (not sure why "normal" rice, rice cakes etc are fine .... we now give DS oat milk enriched with calcium etc ..... not sure if you get Ready Brek over there but it is enriched with almost their day's calcium in it!  Cheese, yogurt, etc also have a lot

Try in the section with the rice milk at Safeway.  That's where I've found coconut milk.  I'm pretty sure Superstore and Walmart carry it too, but not sure what section.
