Making my own pears

OK, I read on wholesome baby food that you steam or cook the pears. Is there a reason why? Can I just blend a pear without cooking (obviously without skins). Does age make a difference?

I went on a weaning course and they suggested we use tinned pears, so that's what I use. Cooking probably just helps the blending process, as I serve them raw to my LO as a finger food. I think that the riper they are, the softer they are and easier to use.

I steam my pears( well all my fruit now, but started with pears) till they are super soft and put them and the water( that taste like pears) into the blender, they taste better then the canned ones and you can freeze some and use it later, plus it's cheaper.
I bought a steamer at the dollar store for $2.00 and use it all the time now.

I don't see any reason why you can't just puree them without steaming if they're ripe enough.

I agree, the steaming just helps break the food down a little so it blends easier.  :)

Mmmm, I love ripe pears!  I figure, with BLW you can give them the pears right away anyway, so they must be ok to eat raw.  When they're really ripe I just give F big chunks and he gobbles them up.   ;D

okay, I just wait to they get really ripe and throw them in the blender.  THey come out beautifully. If you make a ton, freeze it quick or it will turn brown.  They are not bad, they just look funny.  My almost 6 month old loves pears.

I actually sauteed mine with a little water in the pan.  Sounds funny but it was quick and worked really well.  It just made them a lot mushier and easier for  him to eat.  I tried pear pieces but my guy refused BLW. :P  So mashed pears it was!

when I was making baby food I noticed that if I didn't steam the pears they had that "pear grit" to them. My son didn't like that texture, and steaming seemed to take care of it. I say though that if you LO doesn't mind that slightly gritty texture, just blend them raw!
