What size portions???
« on: November 17, 2010, 21:25:52 pm »
Hi there,
My daughter is 5 1/2 months and she is doing really well with her solids.
She has porridge for breakfast plus an 8oz bottle, savoury and fruit for lunch with a 6oz bottle, fruit for dinner with a 6 oz bottle, then an 8oz bottle before bed.
I'm a little unsure of what size portions she should be having though. I have used my own icecube sized vegetable purees and am using the Ellas Kitchen fruit packs. I have just got 3 icecubes out ready for lunch and another 3 for dinner, and then 1/2 fruit for both meals.
Just wondering what you give you LO's
In 2 weeks I plan to drop her lunch and dinner bottles and give her water with her lunch and dinner instead, and find a window somewhere in the day when I can give her another 6oz. So she'll be having an 8oz in the morning, 6oz somewhere in the day and then 8oz for bed. How does this sound to you??! I find it hard as I've nothing to compare it to and wanted to make sure I was on the right track.
Thanks All x

Since she's still really young, I'd say to keep all of her bottles, especially since it seems she eats quite a bit.  She's on the right amount for her age.  With my DS, I didn't drop to 3 bottles until he was closer to 10 mo.

Re: solids, at this point it's more about tastes than it is viewing solids as the meal (breastmilk/formula are still considered the primary source of nutrition).  I'd say that portion-wise, most LOs are eating between a couple of teaspoon's to a tablespoon's worth of solids at each mealtime.  That's what DS was doing when he first started out.  Maybe others have had different experiences.

Here are some links that might help give you an idea of what other LOs her age are doing in regards to when they eat solids and milk:

HTH :)  More than anything, I would follow your LO's cues for when/if she's had enough solids or needs to drop a bottle.

I agree with Sara's advice.  It's really not about quantity at this point, and milk/formula is far more nutritious than solids.  So I wouldn't drop any bottles, and make sure she is getting the appropriate amount of milk.  As long as she is, then you can offer as much as she likes.  It's more important though to offer quality, not quantity, and let her explore and try different tastes and textures.  :)
