Sorta weird crayon behavior
« on: November 21, 2010, 01:26:16 am »
15 month old LO has lost interest in coloring (scribbling) herself. She does a great job, so I'm not worries there's a physical or developmental issue. But she only wants me to draw stuff for her..she most commonly asks for flowers and bunnies, but is equally pleased if I do some abstract thing. She likes to color inside what I draw.

I have no idea about this kind of thing. is this normal phase, or am I stunting her by drawing for her? My goal was just to participate with her, since she handed me the crayon and said "please".

our LOs loved at that age when we drew things for them.

i think it is a normal part of the process and if it helps, our LOs soon took over drawing/writing/colouring again soon after, but it was almost as though they were learning the 'next level' by watching us draw/write for them.

It's normal. Sometimes they want you to do it because you can draw better and "I can't do it!" comes about. Maybe you could try "You draw this part and I'll draw this part" etc and/or hand over hand to show how to make her own flowers and bunnies.

If it makes you feel better, my DD ate crayons (and on occasion still does, UGH) at this age. She is NOT interested in fine motor skills and just scribbles all over now (at 27 months). She likes when I draw her things b/c she likes to color but just hasn't gotten the control needed yet. She's a much more verbal and gross motor kid so I am not worried....I just know she isn't likely to be an artist LOL

That's all reassuring, thank you. Today she tried to draw her own flower...which looked nothing like a flower, but I don't care. She says it's a flower, it's a flower.

You should see DD's drawings of "Daddy", "Mommy", "a kitty", etc. They all look the same; a big mass of swirls in all the same color!

LOL!!! That's wonderful. I can't wait to watch this development progress. We have quite a few artists in our family, so I'll be watching as she gets older to see if there's a passion for this.
