How to wean Nutramigen?
« on: November 26, 2010, 01:21:53 am »
Alyssa has been on Nutramigen for 2.5months. Along with reflux, she may have a mill allergy. She didn't have blood in her stool, but she was very gassy and uncomfortable on Good Start.  Anyhow, for those who used Nutramigen, I am wondering what age did you begin to wean and how did you do it?
I am also finding that she is drinking more then my first lo(she was half BF/FF).  She is drinking now 7ozs. We are going through 2.5 cans a week.

I'm not toally sure but I think if it is milk protien intolerance then most people seem to start experimenting around the year mark to see if the LO has out grown it.

If you are unsure if it is MSPI then (with the ok of your Dr) you could slowly switch from the nutramigen by adding a normal formula in and swapping an oz at a time. So on day 1 you would do 6oz of nutramigen, 1oz of normal formula and keep that for a few days then do 5oz of nutramigen, 2oz of normal formula for the next few days and so on. That way you could see if she was reacting. However if things are going well at the moment I think I would be very reluctant to change anything until she gets a lot bigger and her body is better able to cope with things.

thanks Laura. I plan to wait a little more, since she is doing well with this formula.

Hi,

My Lo is also on Nutramigen and has a 'Milk Protein intolerance'. We have been advised that for his first year we should use this milk and avoid cows milk products when weaning, at one year old we will try and introduce cows milk in small quantities, if he has a bad reaction we stop and try again at three years old. If he has a bad reaction again it will probably be a life long intolerance. This advice was given to us by a specialist dietition at hospital. Hope this helps  :)

Makes sense. Her pead wanted to try a milk based formula to see if she truly has a milk allergy.  If I do decide to try it, I am most likely going to wait until she is over six months. I am too scared to try now.
