Eggs and deli meat
« on: December 06, 2010, 21:15:17 pm »
Hello.  Are you folks giving egg yolk and white and deli meats to LO's over 12 months?  I thought that after 12 months everything is fair game for kids not prone to allergies.  Is that correct?

It depends on who you ask really, but where I live it is considered safe try to most anything once LO is over 12 mo.

In the UK pretty much anything is fair game from 6 months apart from honey, salt, sugar and nuts so if your happy to give them then go ahead. The only thing with deli meats is not to give too often because of the salt and preservatives etc.

Agree with all above.  After 12 months, there should be no issues (assuming no allergies).  Chicken, Deli meats and hot dogs are the only meat my 3 year old will eat.  A lot of LO's do not like red meat, pork etc.  I think with mine it is probably a texture/chewing thing.  So, if not for deli meats, she would hardly eat any meat at LO.

PP is right about presevative/salt content, but given how small the portion sizes, if you give these in moderation, you should have no issues.

I recently read that eggs should be hard boiled until age 5 or so, when their immune systems are better (assume that is just for if an egg had salmonella, etc), but apart from that I gave DS the other things (including hard boiled eggs).  Agree with pp about watching the levels of salt though ...
