I held out as long as I could for a 10am nap this morn. Jack was completely shattered due to short night. Ended up going down around 9:50am. Here is my dilemma: do I let him sleep as much as he wants today for his 2 naps to catch up or do I keep them at 1.5hrs and 1hr with a BT closer to 7pm to see if he can catch up? I just worry that we will still get NWs and even an EW as the A times are so short.

What to do???

Only slept for 30min. this am!!!!! Will shoot for an earlier pm nap. Does 1:30pm sound right? And do I let him sleep as long ashe wants or cap it at 1.5hrs?

Sorry hun I am probably waaaayyyyy too late!  What did you decide?  I wouldn't be surprised if your am nap was a one off - short night, not his "usual" time etc.  I would let him sleep as long as he wants this afternoon.

He sounds like he's getting OT again?  Did you give any pain meds in the night?

Let me know what happens.

Put Jack down at 1:20pm and I let him sleep for 2hr20min. I'm sure he could have slept longer, but I wanted to preserve BT at 7pm. It's now 9:30pm and haven't heard anything, but if we have NWs they usually occur around 11ish.

It does seem like he is getting OT again since we are getting shorter nights but days are longer. Part of me thinks that BT needs to be earlier than 7:30pm because the longer time it takes for Jack to settle at BT is due to OT and not UT?? What do you think? Would 7:15pm be a good BT?

Are the long NWs due to OT? What about the EWs?

Def worth trying the earlier bedtime.  I have believed for a long time with DS that the long NWs were OT but now he's older I'm not so sure *however* I def found them to be worse when he was OT.  So I would go with the earlier bed and see what happens.

EWs can be either but for us they *tended* to be teeth or UT at bedtime...

Last night was much better. The early BT definitely helped. Still had a NW around 12:45am and EW at 5am. Both times Jack resettled within 10min or so and I medicated at the first NW. Overall his NS was around 11hrs40min as he woke at 6:40am. I think in our case the EW isn't UT at BT as last night Jack settled quickly. So maybe it is teeth?? UGH.

We will see what today brings. Jack has a doc appt today at 9:30am. Worried that he'll go down later for his am nap. Does the short am/long pm nap help with EWs?

Hi Laura,
We are back for more advice. I hope the New Year is starting off right for you after all you went thru in 2010.

Well, I think we are closer now to one nap than before. Since Sunday, we've had 3 one nap days. The first was on Sunday and Jack did well. Went 5hrs to nap time, then 4hrs20min to BT since the nap was only 1hr20min. Then he STTN for over 12+hrs. The next day I tried the same thing and his A time to nap was much shorter. Even with the good night sleep, he was so tired the next day and only lasted a little over 3hrs and this time he slept 3hrs for his nap!!! Then I think I got the A time (4.5hrs) wrong to BT as he had multiple NWs. Perhaps the A time needed to be longer or Jack had too much DT sleep?

Today had another am nap refusal and lasted until 12:10pm and it is 2:30pm and Jack is still sleeping. I'm sure it might be close to another 3hr nap as his night last night was terrible. Short, less than 10hrs sleep so probably making it up, but would have thought he would have wanted to sleep at 10am, but NO! So my questions are:

- how long do you let your lo sleep during the day on one nap?
- if lo sleeps for 2+ hrs, what is the A time to BT?
- Or could you help me with a set nap time and BT for one nap days? Thinking something like this:

7am WU
11am Nap, but for how long? 3hrs max?
6pm BT, if 3hr nap, will 4hrs to BT be enough?

Ideas? TIA.
Oanh

Hi!

I wish I could say we'd had a better start to 2011 but it hasn't really ben but that's a whole other story ::)

How many hours was he sleeping when he was on 2 naps?  This can help guide the length of one nap.  If though he sleeps at 11am for 3hrs you can probably do a 6.30-7pm bedtime ( asleep for 7pm is prob ok)

If he starts sleeping well at night and wake at7am you will soon be able to push the nap back *if* needed.

I'll get someone to move this to Toddler sleep too now :)

Hi Oanh, haven't crossed your path much recently now that Jack is one! Hope you re all doing OK.

Why don't you post over on the Transition sticky? Point them over here to this thread - the sticky is a busy thread (the under 1s anyway (not sure about the other one)) but I am sure the ladies wll be happy to help!

Hi Laura,
Sorry to hear that the year hasn't started off too well for you. Sending you some good vibes for your year to improve.

We ended up doing two naps yesterday at the set times you had suggested previously - 10am (1.5hrs) and 2:30pm (1hr). BT was at 8pm. Jack will fight BT if I try earlier.

For the last 3 days he has had long NWs that last for 2hrs, even on one nap days which surprises me as I would think he would be tired. I know milestones can attribute to these and I'm hoping that is the case (Jack is learning how to walk), if not then I am at a loss and I've been rolling with it.

We are still trying to figure things out even on one nap days as Jack's nights haven't lengthened. It is still hovering around 10hrs and I'm hoping that time will allow his body to adjust?? Have any words of wisdom for me??

Thanks Wendy for moving my post to the toddler board.

Claire - yes, been a bit MIA as been trying to sort things out. Will post on 2-1 trans board for babies as the toddler one is VERY quiet. Thanks for the suggestion.

10hrs usually indicates OT.

Have you tried a 7pm bed?  I know you said he fights it but if he's been up a lot the previous night it's bound to catch up - I would def give it a shot...
