Way off track
« on: December 12, 2010, 13:18:46 pm »
Hoping for some support/suggestions here.
We started BW/EASY a little over a week ago and I have to say it made a huge improvement in our home and my 3.5 mos old was doing really well considering it was so early. Then he got hit with a cold Thurs and it's all gone to pot. He was on a 3 hr EASY (plan to extend to 4 hr after holidays). So now he's EW/NW and taking mostly short naps. My question is, should I still be shh/pat to extend his naps and get him back to sleep at night? A few times I've BFed him for comfort, but I don't want to get into bad habits again. Basically I'm wondering from others experiences how much of the routine should I try to hold onto while he's sick?
Thanks in advance.

Hi there when LO is ill I usually do whatever I have to so we can all get our sleep - I still do whatever it takes at 21 mths and with an independent sleeper!  Kids just need the comfort when they are ill...I know I do. You can break the habits fairly easily at 3.5 mths...when he's feeling back to fighting fit.  Really their little bodies need the rest to recover so I see it as the lesser of two evils.

You have to do what you are comfortable with (((hugs)))

Thanks Wendy, that's really what I've been doing, I just wanted the validation. =) After nursing him at his first 2 wake-ups and not being able to get him back down, I actually brought him to bed with me and snuggled/nursed him for the rest of the night. That was the whole thing that got this BW-ing started, but we were both at the end of our ropes in the night. I'm confident we can get it all fixed up when he's all fixed up, but I'm sure I'll be back for some more help.
Thanks again!

You will be able to get back on track, that's the beauty of BW really - the sleep training once you do it will usually become ingrained and they go back to what they know when the illness or developmental issue is finished.

You're doing great, follow your LO is what Tracy really hoped for!
