HELP much needed with 11.5mo several NW and too little nap time
« on: December 13, 2010, 12:12:54 pm »
Ok, we are really strugling here to maintain our sanity.
DS2 was a great night sleeper as a newborn and until he was about 6mo. Nap time was always on the low side, but since he slept so well during the night things were good.
After the 6mo mark things have progressivily getting worst with night sleep. He started with just one or two NW but easily get back to sleep, to several NW and a nightmare to fall asleep again. His naptime is also getting worst.
This past two nights have been a completely nightmare to me with almost no sleep. I'm on gthe verge of pulling all my hair out, and just feel like crying  :'(
Last night he slept well from 8.30 till 00.30 am and from that moment on he woke up every 10 minutes screaming and screaming and it was very difficult to calm him and get him back to sleep, until around 5am I gave up and was so tired that I brought him to my bed and he slept a little better until 7.45am.
The night before he woke around midnight and after abount 45minutes managed to get him back to sleep, and after that he woke again at 4:30 and managed to get him back to sleep almost at 7:00am and then slept until 8:15. When he woke at 4:30 and after a while of been awake and crying very hard, I feed him some formula thinking maybe he was hungry, he drunk it all but it made no difference in the sleep.
This is his routine:

7:30 am wake/eat/play
10:00 eat fruit/play
11:30 eat lunch (soup, fish or meat and fruit)
1:00 nap (in the best of days 1:30 hours, other 1:00 hour, 45 minutes...)eat/play
2:30 wakes up and play
3:45 eat cereals/play
7:00 dinner time
7:30 bath, PJ's, botlle and in bed around 8:00
The no nap in the morning is because we have to adjust his routine to the daycare routine and we realised that when he slept in the morning that time he slept he would not slept after lunch (ex: if he slept 30 minutes in the morning nap, after lunch he would sleep less 30 minutes than usual) and also because morning nap time and after lunch nap time are so close (morning nap is from 10:45 to 11:30 and after lunch nap time is from 1:00 to 3:00), he simply is not tired enough to go back to sleep and takes ages for him to fall asleep.
I'm completely at lost here and don't know what to do to get him back to be a good sleeper... :'(

Hi there, is your LO teething now?  It sounds like discomfort with that level of screaming.

I also think OT is a big factor but sounds like you are limited in your routine due to daycare restrictions...my kid would struggle with the kind of day your LO has and he's 21 mths!  Your LO needs a much longer nap or a much shorter day to compensate for those really high A times.
The tweaking never stops!

Maybe he his teething, I don't know. I don't see anything there in his gums but maybe. The problem is that last night, before he went to bed I gave him some paracetamol and it made no difference. Don't know what to do.
With naps it's the same problem, no matter what we do he never sleeps more that 1:30m at best, most days it's only an hour, and I can't get him in bed for the night early because we arrive at home close to 7p.m. so 8:00 it's the best I can do.
How do I fix this... :(

Tonight DS2 slept well until 4:30, but woke up crying very hard and completely awake, like for him it was time to get up for the day. It took me more than an hour to get him back to sleep and then he slept until 8:15.
What can I do to help him sleep better?

Would he do 2 naps if the first nap was only 20 mins?  At that age my LO would do a 20 min nap at about 3.5 hrs A time and then a longer nap in the afternoon, normally at 3 hrs A time.

Is that a possibility?

In the weekend yes, but during the week I don't think so. The first nap maybe because then he would sleep until near lunch time, but the after lunch nap, no because their nap time is between 1 and 3pm a little more sometimes, but if he slept in the morning that would mean that the afternoon nap would be around 2:15/2:30pm when all other babies would be waking.

How long has this been going on now? since 6mths?  When did you start solids - could it be related to food, that amount of waking and screaming def sounds like discomfort / pain.

Hi.
About when he was 6 months he started waking 1 or 2 times during night and was easy to get him back to sleep.Only now he wakes up screaming.Things have been getting worst since he was 10mo.
DS started eating cereals when he was 4mo.so I don't think it is related to that.
Maybe he is teething because sometimes, when I rub some teething gel in his gums he calms down and fall asleep, but I don't know...

I would do a much earlier bedtime during the week if you can.

What sort of thing does he have for dinner?

Usually at dinner he eats a vegetable with meat or fish soup and some fruit and before he goes to bed he drinks a bottle with 180/210ml of formula

Have you tried without fruit at dinner - some fruits can interfere with sleep if eaten right before bed.

Do you think an earlier bedtime is something you can try?

Hi. Never tried without the fruit because I use fruit for him to eat the soup... but the fruits I usually give him at night are pear and apple.
About an earlier bedtime, it's complicated because we only get home near 7:00pm :(

Another night when it took me 2 hours to get him back to sleep... :( He slept well until 2:45 and then woke up and wouldn't fall asleep again... When will this pass... I'm so tired... :(

Could you get daycare to try the 2 naps again with him but to wake him after 30mins in the am nap and then let him nap again at the pm nap slot?

That is interesting - do you know which fruits?
