Struggling to drop catnap..
« on: December 20, 2010, 20:03:58 pm »
Hi,

Thanks to BW forum and you ladies which I have been getting advise since my DD is 2 months. With the guidance and support we had, we had a very accountable EASY for the very beginning. DD managed to learn the night sleeping first, and then the EAS pattern, lately in the last months she was extending her naps more than 45 mins and also very recently we were working for independent sleeping. She is 8.5 mo now. When she was 5 mo, I started working but this did not change our routine very much.

For the last weeks, we are struggling to drop the catnap. She can stay 2.5 hrs awake now. She sleeps  a total of 2-3 hrs during the day so she wakes up from her last sleep around 16.00, by 18.30-18.45 she is usually cranky, but then DH comes and she gets energized again and plays with her for an hour which I believe makes her OT. I dont want to put her for a nap at 18.30 which is very late, I cannot put her for her night sleep at 19.00 as I believe daddy and his girl want to spend some time together.

I have tried to extend her awake hours by 15 mins as advised but it didnt work. She usually shows very well when she is sleepy, and this is usually 2.30 hrs.

I dont know how to proceed. She was usually an easy sleeper, but for the last month it takes hours for her to sleep even in my arms. I was hoping and working to teach her independent sleep but this catnap issue changed our whole sleeping pattern. Appreciate your advises on where to start. Our typical day is as follows.

8.30 Wake Up
9.00 Breakfast
11.00-12.30 Sleep
13.00 Lunch
15.00-16.00 Sleep
16.30 Fruits
18.00 Mommy comes home
18.30 Dinner
19.30-19.45 BF and night routine starts
20.30-21.00 She falls a sleep
She then has 1 or 2 Nws (She usually Bfs around 1.00 and 5.00)

hi there,

I'm afraid I have to agree with the previous advice you received about extending her A times little by little until she is closer to 3 hrs A time.  There just aren't enough hours of A time in the day to hold you over until bedtime without a catnap you see?  So if you can't get the catnap in, then you could opt for an early bedtime until her A times increase more.

It's a tough spot to be in this transition, but hopefully short-lived!

HTH :)
