16 week old....night waking...is it a schedule or prop issue?
« on: December 23, 2010, 21:50:04 pm »
I have a 16 week old son.  He is 17 lbs and 27 inches.  He was as predictable as you can dream it until day light saving time.  Things went nuts then.  I made the mistake I think of not adjusting properly for the time change. He now wakes up at 1:30, 2:30 and 3:30 am everynight.  He used to fall asleep after fussing for the most part until his fuss extended to 40 mins or longer.  I then started to reinsert the paci at which point he would quickly fall back asleep. I tried wake to sleep but given he wakes up every hour now, don't know where to start.  After that, he wakes up at 5AM - feed him 5 oz.  Goes back to sleep without paci.
Awake again somewhere between 6:30 -6:40.  We don't go to him until 7 no matter what.

E:7
A:7:30-8:15 changing out of jammies and reading
S: 8:30 -9:10, then back down 9:20-10am (i usually reinsert paci to fall back asleep)
E: 11
A: 11:30-12:30 baby gym and reading
S: 12:30- 1:10ish, then back down 1:20ish - 2:20 (i usually reinsert paci to fall back asleep)
E: 3
A: 3:30-4 tummy time and/or floor playing depending on his energy level.
S: 4ish (40-70 min or so)

6:30 Wind down- feed, and then sleeping at 7 -7:15pm

Bed time routine is feed, bath, jammies and prayer before putting him down swaddled and with paci.
He is bottle fed and drinks 6.5 - 7 oz (appro 35 oz in a 24 period, takes about 30 mins total). He is 27 inches tall and weighs approx 18 lbs.  He was born 6.14 lbs and 23 inches tall.

I have tried to do wake to sleep starting with the 1:20 AM wake up.  I thought I could fix that first then move to 2:20.  It worked for 2 nights but its back now.

Help I don't know what I should look to address first.  Also interested in stopping the swaddle, is it the right time?

So he's waking at 1.30 am and 5am for feeds? Totally normal at this age, nothing to worry about I'd say. Do you do a dreamfeed?

We dreamfeed at 11pm and he takes 7oz. He wakes up at 1:30am, 2:30am, 3:30am but doesn't feed until he wakes up at 5am again. Thanks

So at those feedings you just replug and he goesback to sleep? In that case yes it does sound like a prop issue.

I want to make sure I answer your question properly.  The 1:30, 2:30 and 3:30 am wake ups are not feedings.  He just wakes up on the clock and needs the paci to fall back asleep.  Thanks.

Yep. If he's waking up frequently for a replug then it sounds like the paci is a prop :/

Hey Anna,
Is it possible props also establish habitual wakings?  He wakes up at 1:30, 2:30 and 3:30 everynight.  Should we tackle the prop issue with PU/PD or wake to sleep (if so how given they are an hour apart?) or both?  DH is home for the week and would like the help while he is around. Thank you.

For habitual wakings you'd do W2S 1hr before the FIRST waking - if you can disrupt that waking it should, hopefully, have a knock on effect on the subsequent ones. So you'd do W2S at about 12.30, and then do if he wakes.
