Blood in pumped milk

Maybe I've been away from BF modding for too long, but I am stumped...

Question for a sister of a friend...

She gave birth about 24 hours ago.  Baby not latching, so she is pumping.  When she pumps, she says there is blood *in* the milk, which is not present when she hand expresses.  Any ideas?  Lactation consultant is stumped (gee, that's what you are trained for, no?  ::) ) and says it is not the size of the phalanges.  She says it is not the breast bleeding...

This is her second, she tried BFing her first for a couple weeks, but had bleeding and pain then as well.

Are they sure it's not the nipple?  I think that's the usual source of blood in milk.  No cracked nipples or anything? :-\

When I had blood in my milk it was definitely from the nipple - I'm sure that's the most likely cause.  It's possible that the pump is a bit less gentle than the hand which could be why it is only when she pumps that she sees it.

Agree with the girls that it sounds like the nipples are bleeding? Maybe she could use a gentler suction on the pump?

I had this as well, my midwife however was not stumped... :)
