30 minute naps out of the blue
« on: January 02, 2011, 01:21:18 am »
What's up with a 30 minute nap? My LO's 1st and 3rd naps of the day were both 30 minutes (resettled after 1st nap, but didn't bother with 3rd as we were heading out). I had been putting him down at 1h30 or 1h35min as he has trouble lasting any longer. Today I was shooting for 1h40min, do you think the extra 5 min would have made him OT? Or does 30 min mean something else usually? I definitely don't think it was UT as he was doing a bit of yawning and snuggling in as I carried him around for his wind down. He's 4.5 mos and shows no signs of being able to move towards a 2hr awake time.
I understand the goal is to move towards a 4 hr EASY, but I'm wondering if I should just hang out at the 3hr or keep trying to stretch the A time?
We're pretty sure there's something going on with his teeth right now, does that ever lead to 30 min naps? I just find it random as he usually gives 35 minutes if he's OT and 45 minute if he doesn't get through the transition on his own, but these were definitely 30s.

Is this the first day you've gotten the 30 minute naps?  Could just be a blip and he'll be back to normal tomorrow.  You will find though that naps will get shorter if they aren't getting enough A time.  Have you considered a 3.5 hour EASY?

Thanks Shiv, I got another one today, after 2 45 minutes naps that I was able to extend, he threw in a 30 minute one and would have none of me extending it. I think you might be right about him being UT because he woke up happy from it. So hard to know b/c he shows signs of being tired and when I put him in the crib he goes straight off to sleep.
I'm going to try to push his A times a bit tomorrow and see what happens. Would you think that the 45 minutes naps are showing he's slightly UT and the 30 min naps even more UT? I was getting through some transitions on his own before the holidays, but things are off all over now due to evenings out and missing CNs and such.
I will try to push A times tomorrow, heading toward 3.5 hr EASY and see how that goes.
Thanks again for your input.

Hi, sorry to jump in but my 13 week old has also started the 30 minute naps for 3 days now and have only been able to extend the 3pm nap as she's so tired by then.
as usual, after 1hr 15 - 1hr 30 of awake time, i will put her in her sleeping bag-thing and swaddle her, hold her for a little where she's yawning and rubbing her eyes and snuggling. i put her down and she will lie there for as much an hour (sometimes more) awake. sometimes quietly, sometimes blowing bubbles, crying, moaning etc. if she cries, i will go to her and when she sees me, she smiles or laughs or blows more bubbles!!!! i used to be able to stand at the door and say 'shhhh' or 'it's just time to sleep now' but now if i do that she will cry. the shush-pat used to work where she'd fall asleep but now it seems to make her cry hysterically. today, if she couldn't see me i she would cry but if i stood there, she would stop. she sleeps 12 hours at night and a lot of people have said that 'if she sleeps well at night then you shouldn't worry about the day sleep' but she gets so miserable as she's so tired.
we also had 2 visitors today (who were quiet and calm) and when they held her or even came near her she cried but was laughing and normal with us. is this a phase or any ideas how to sort it out?
she's on 3hr - 3h15 easy. (tried to go longer but she's not ready for it)
any ideas will be greatly appreciated
thanks
