11 mo - solids and STTN
« on: January 04, 2011, 12:29:27 pm »
Hi we are on 3 BFs and 3 meals with a snack but last night DS woke twice and seemed genuinely hungry. He is MSPI and off wheat and egg so foods fairly limited.

What kind of calories do they need to get through the night? Are there any good high cal foods I could try?

Thanks

Can he have oats with some kind of alternative milk? Oat milk perhaps?
Does he eat meat and fish? Cadan loves minced lamb and beef as well as salmon.
And sweet potatoes are good carbs. Could he eat that wheat-free pasta you can get that is made from pulses? It doesn't taste that different from regular pasta IMO. Not sure if it has eggs in though. Or other pulses perhaps like cannelini (sp?) beans and lentils? Cadan like lentil cakes with cumin.
I don't know how many calories they need but would be interested to know.

I wonder if he's having a little growth spurt?

Not too sure about calories, but I would think proteins would be the most fulfilling and sustain him the longest.  Probably healthy carbs as well if he can have some.  PPs have had some good suggestions.  :)

Could be a growth spurt. Is there one at 11-12 months? He owke last night at 12, fed from one side (normal for us at night) went back to sleep then woke up screaming 40 mins later for the other side.

Thanks for all the ideas. He already has oats and oat milk for brekkie every day, am trying avacado and GF pasta and found the other day he LOVES chunks of chicken now. Half his dinner is puree from a jar and the rest is finger foods. I wonder if I made my own purees they would be higher in calories? I used to but then he refused them and I have never got back into making them again. Plus at nearly 1 year I find it hard to get the right consistency of thinnish but with big enough lumps to chew on.

I think there is a GS around a year or so.

I wouldn't bother messing around with purees at this point.  Since he's almost a year you'd want to be continuing to encourage more finger foods anyway.  Purees don't necessarily pack more calories, often they tend to contain a lot of water.

If he loves chunks of chicken then work with that.  What about meatballs?  You can actually pack a bunch of veg and even quinoa into them as well, which is high in protein.

Thanks Martina. I shall have a look in my baby recipes books for finger food ideas. Quinoa is a great idea, I have heard of it but not used it yet. So hard to think about new foods when getting so little sleep! Must try harder!
