He won't eat the crusts...
« on: January 06, 2011, 15:16:56 pm »
On bread or pizza.  This is a new development.

So scenario might be that DH and DS are having Marmite toast.  DS eats his 'meaty' bits of the toast, leaves a load of crusts...then asks for more.  He wants DH's meaty bits.  But DH wants his own Marmite meaty bits!  Battle ensues.  Crying starts (mainly DH lol kidding!)

So do you make new crustless toast or tell DS 'hey there's some on your plate mate'

This morning he asked for more toast after not eating his crusts...but since I don't make Marmite toast, I gave him cereal lol

I will admit that even as an adult, I'm anti-crust - so I get where he is coming from...

Masyn was like that too, until one day she asked for ranch and now she dips her crust afterwards and eats it.  We did start by cutting the crust off, but then when she learned how to make her own toast I made her do it if that's how she wanted it.  Not really a battle I found worth it...

We have it here too - have done for ages. I don't sweat it to be honest, I let him have up to two bits of toast and cut the crusts off as closely as I can so that half the toast isn't left!! I don't eat crusts on pizza so I can't comment on that! Lol!

Sometimes I'll leave them on just to see if he'll eat them. I'm sure he will eventually!

He will just have to learn from me to eat the crust first. Save the good bit for last! ;)

For us this wasn't a battle I wanted to fight.  I don't like pizza crust either... the crust of bread is tasteless... and the crust of toast hurts my gums to chew.  LOL, therefore I feel the non-crust-eating thing, is legit!

I make him two pieces of toast, cut the crusts off and call it a day.  I feel he (my kid) doesn't need more than two pieces a bread during a meal, so if he wants more - and the issue is he is still hungry, I offer him to healthy choices.

Good luck!

You don't say?! ;)

Personally I don't get on board with the cutting crusts off thing. Colin gets his bread/toast or what not and if he wants to take the crusts off he can, and usually he does. But that's what he gets so if he wants to choose not to eat part, then that's that.

I actually like crust. Didn't used to as a kid of course, but my mother told me that bread crust is like potato skin and that's where all the nutrients are so I should eat it. I did and learned to like it. I think it was some time in high school when I found out that crust had nothing to do with nutrients.  :-[

In the UK you can buy crustless bread!! Never tried it though. DS sometimes leaves his crust but other times likes them ???  I think it is a texture thing - you could try cutting off the crusts and offering them as "soldiers"?

Pizza crust ..... that's my FAVOURITE part of the pizza!! I will have your DS's crusts!!

Jess what a hysterical photo of Colin lol  Love it!

I guess I'm not concerned with getting him to eat the crusts, it's just that he's still hungry because he's not eating them...and thus wants more bread so he can leave the crusts as well.  So every day I'm putting all these little hardened little crust ends into the bio bin.  And then we go through a lot more bread lol  And he's also getting really stroppy when DH or I won't give him a 'bite' of what we are having - if he's eaten all his sans crusts.  DH wants every last bit of his sandwich lol so he's not good at sharing.  But how can you resist that little face that comes over to you smiles and says 'biiiiite?'

But I get why he's not eating them, I eat mine because I'm a big girl and my mommy made me lol but sometimes, with certain bread, I will leave them.  And if there's no dipping sauce for the pizza crust, I'll often leave them too.  I actually prefer the flatbread pizza now because of it.  But I digress.

So one plan (thanks Zoey) is to offer him x amount of toast and if he leaves the crust and is still hungry then give him something else.  Oh and don't cut them off.  I figure one day he may be hungry enough to eat it all.  Or at least get the idea that is how bread comes - although the UK is changing the game with their special crustless bread lol

Neither of mine ate crusts on the bread or toast until they were past 3 years old so personally I would just give him another crustless piece.

The really interesting part is that he used to eat the crusts - when he first started sandwiches he pretty much ate the whole thing lol  This is a new development, we've had a lot of 'new developments' as far as his likes and dislikes go these days.  It's like he had a revelation - that or he some kid at daycare not eat them and that's that lol

cut the crusts off as closely as I can so that half the toast isn't left!!

I do this, because if I cut off the very tiny thing strip along the outer edge he'll eat 98% of a piece of bread.  If I leave the crust on, he only eats about 75% of the bread b/c the rest is too close to the crust.

LOL these kids eh and the tricks we have to think of to keep them in line ;-)  It's valid though because you are right, he's leaving some of the bread too because clearly it has been crust contaminated.

Slightly thicker Marmite at the edges?
Saying that, I will toss cheese on a tortilla and stick it in the oven.  Charlotte will run off with a piece and bring back the edge, even if there is still cheese there.  It's to make us nuts.

DS used to eat crusts and then decided he didn't want them.  If I leave them on he leaves half the bread next to the crust too so I just cut them off.  I figure one day he'll stop bothering!  He eats the crusts for my mum though ::)
