Solids - when?
« on: January 13, 2011, 20:07:54 pm »
Hi

I want to give DS (5.5 mo) his first tastes of solid food but I'm not sure when.
In the book - Tracy says to give it BEFORE breastfeeding and to start at the morning feed.

In the forum I see that it is combined during the A time, meaning, after eating was done.

Any insights?
Morning or noon?
Before or after bearstfeeding?

Thanks!
May.

Hi May!  I would start in the morning, that way if by some chance the food irritates your baby's tummy, you have the whole day to hopefully get over it.  I would also give it 30-60mins after BFding for two reasons.  Firstly, milk is more important anyway, so you don't want your baby to fill up on solids and not drink any milk.  Secondly, at this point it's not about solids satisfying hunger, and your baby doesn't understand that solids fill him up.  So he is probably more likely to be receptive to trying something new if he is not already hungry.  If he is hungry, and wants his milk, then he might just get cranky and frustrated at the solids.  Hope that makes sense.  Good luck!!  :)
