Seriously, WHAT is going on over here??
« on: January 20, 2011, 13:46:09 pm »
Sigh.  I'm just feeling very confused.  Austin has definitely been in an OT hole lately but I really thought it was getting better - until last night.  But now I'm not sure if this is OT (but there are SO many NWs that I feel that's less likely?), teething (but he'll start the NW a half hour after I give meds - right when they're kicking in, so ???), or maybe confusional awareness (but sometimes it lasts all night long which doesn't seem to fit?).

Basically we've been having short NW pretty much every night for the past couple of months.  But in the last couple of weeks, also short naps and short nights.  The 2 nights before last night were good, though, with either just 1 NW or, on Tues night, almost 11.5h with no NW at all.  So I really thought we were on the upswing.

Here's yesterday:

(7:15 PM sleep)
6:15: yelled out, DH went to lay in there and he went right back down
7:15: A
12:05: S
12:50: yelled out, I went to pat his back and he went back to sleep
1:20: again with the yelling/patting
1:50: A (so, despite the wakings, this was the best nap we've had in 2 weeks)
7: S
(11:15: DF ibuprofen)
11:45: started whining, yelling out.  We waited to see what would happen and he will stop for a minute but then it sounds like it's escalating so I go in.  Pat his back but he REALLY seems like he's still asleep.  This goes on every 5-15 min until 1:15 when it just stops.
5:45: screaming bloody murder.  Pat his back.
6:30: same thing, and back to sleep
7: awake

He's done this whining/crying when he appears to be asleep thing a lot lately.  It's been that way for most of the NWs the past few months.  But 3 times in the past 2 weeks now it's been particularly bad.  But the other 2 nights it went on all night long.  So last night was better but the length of the events makes me think it can't be confusional awareness, right?  But I have medicated him up the wazoo and he'll start up right after so I don't think it's teeth.  And I usually think OT wakings won't be so frequent.  I'm confused!   I feel like if I can't figure out what's causing it that I can't fix it.

I am trying to get him out of the OT hole.   Shooting for 5h A in the AM and the PM and trying for the best nap I can get, although that hasn't been going particularly well.

Any thoughts?  :-\

If it was me I'd get his ears checked just to be on safe side, for us frequent nw and crying out when he appears to be asleep is usually the start of an ear infection. It's probably not in your case but i would get it checked to be sure since things are so bad. What's he like during the day? Any signs of feeling ill or a bit under the weather?

Also sounds like ears to me. DS sleeps like that when he's getting a bad head cold/congestion, ear infection or when he's eaten something he's intolerant of and having a reaction and tummy pains...

Hmm.  He's not acting ill, really, just a little fussy here and there.  I'm also less inclined to think it's ears since it's been going on for 2 weeks and it'd inconsistent.  I can look into it, though.

Tummy pains is interesting.  I hadn't considered that.  Can't think of anything new he ate yesterday, though...:-\

Kate we have had no signs and yet Finn has had an ear infection.  He doesn't even get a fever these days!

I do think it's discomfort - medication doesn't always help either so you can't discount the teeth.

Your day looks fine so something is clearly up

I guess I was thinking this too but I figured how could he be SO uncomfortable right after getting meds.  But I guess I don't remember all those teeth shifting around in my head and trying to push their way in. ::)  I'll check his ears after nap just to be sure, though.  I guess I just need to remember that whatever this is, it too shall pass and I'm doing everything I can to help him ATM. :(

Can you check his ears on your own?

Yes it does pass but really it's a huge bummer when a nice routine goes out the window.  We only had a half-decent one and I want it back lol

Oops, yes, cat out of bag.  I can check them. ;)

Yes I miss our nice routine!  Things were going along tickety-boo (which I think is a phrase I learned from you, Wendy? ;)) and now we're all mucked up and I miss sleeping and my super happy kid! :(
