I need advice with changing diapers
« on: January 21, 2011, 05:08:35 am »
:o

Hello, everyone
I am very new to this forum and since I could not find a category that would be more appropriate for my question, I decided to ask it under the EASY general questions one. Sorry, if it is a wrong category to be in and if so, anybody could possibly direct me to the appropriate one? (the search function was down for some reason)
Anyhow, here is my issue.
I am currently working on perfecting my EASY schedule with my 4 months old son. And everything seems to be working according to the book more or less(as I am still working on perfecting it, as I said above:), but there is one problem that we have been having since day one. Any time I need to change his diaper in the middle of the night, he wakes up and starts screaming, I am not saying crying, because it is more like a desperate scream for help. The room is usually warm, the lights are always dimmed when I change his diaper and I am very fast and gentle at the same time in doing it. Needless to say it is hard to put him back to bed afterward, so I would usually do that before I nurse him, but that makes it almost impossible to switch to no night time feeding and SSTN. Obviously I cannot not change his diaper at all, as he would wake himself up by getting wet, it happened on a few occasions he would wake up as what he was wearing got wet, because a diaper can hold so much.
Would appreciate any piece of advice or at least redirect me to the already existing topic, if there is one, so that I could read the answers and suggestions that have been made.
Thank you

hi there,
He's probably too big to change on your lap but have you tried changing him in his bed or somewhere safe/soft like that? If you're changing him and then nursing him I don't think that's a huge problem. Because when he stops feeding at night you won't need to be changing his nappy anyway. If you're not getting upto feed him you won't be getting up to just change his nappy, also as he won't be eating at night he won't be filling his nappy as much. does that help?

Have you tried using the next size up nappy? That's what I do at night and I only change him if its soiled - next size up will hold more wee so no more night time changes.

I'm not sure where you live but we have huggies overnights. And they are a disposable over night diaper that holds a TON of liquids! My first lo drank 35-40 oz's a day and never woke from feeling wet after we switched...

I now order them online at amazon.com as its the cheapest now.

Good luck.

What sort of diapers are you using?  Generally, unless your baby poops, there is no need to change him.  If you're worried about leaks then you can try overnights, the next size up, or a different brand as pp's have suggested.  One of those tactics usually worked for us for leaks.  I avoid diaper changes at night at all costs.  Usually DS2 will scream like that as well, and it is just because he is tired and doesn't want to have to be undressed to get changed!   ::)  It is a total PITA!  :P

Once mine stopped pooing at night I put them in a night diaper a size or two bigger than what they wore in the day and didn't change them at night, even with my second who was still having a dream feed and two night feeds.  We used pampers baby dry, but lately I discovered the pampers cruisers are way more absorbant.

Thank you so much for the advices! I have tried different brands of diapers including Huggies and that is what he was wearing last night and once again woke up wet in the bottom area. But I think it is a very good idea to try a size bigger, is there any difference between overnight diapers and diapers a size bigger or would it have pretty much the same affect?
Thanks again to all of you!

TBH I think overnights and one size bigger do the same trick.  I use overnights 4 on DS2, but regular sized 5's are just as good.  Sometimes you gotta experiment with what works.  I do find I use diapers 1 or 2 sizes bigger in general as I just prefer how they fit.
