it is so hard for you to notice any results with his sleeping and it is probably not in your control iykwim i.e. medical issues are a large part of it.

Totally agree!! I think if I were you I would add a short nap back in too this week whilst you are around & see how it goes?

do you reckon he gets more night sleep with or without the nap or do you not notice a difference?
I would say more night sleep without the nap and quicker settling times both at the beginning of the eve and during the night (well I think anyway!)

Yesterday with no nap I think this is what happened...
asleep 6.30pm
wake 1.45am ish - was def back asleep by 2.20am though
heard him this morning at 6.55am shouting cos he needed a poo - I suspect he'd been awake say from 6.30am - so probably around an 11.5hr night which is pretty good.

He's currently napping now - but planning to wake him around the 30min mark....

((((Laura))))

If you haven't already tried it, are alternate naps days worth a try? i know L hated being woken from a nap so the catnaps weren't popular....
goes against our gut to have an irregular routine i know but every other day for 45-60 mins  ??? just throwing it out there

can't believe you are still dealing with this  :o i hope O is feeling better soon and the hospital appt gives you some answers too

Not sure you'd think that if you met me tearing my hair out! ;)

Laura - I can wake O no problems from a nap I just never know what sort of time ot whether I should be mucking around with his bodyclock or if giving him a nap actually isn't helping the matter - I just feel totally lost!  I guess I have been kind of doing alternate things but where he's been poorly I've let him nap more than not.  Today I woke him after 35mins and it still took him a while to go off this evening :-\

I just wish something would click and *fast*  I mean TBH it really could be health related but I just am hoping that it's not cos I'm struggling to function as it is. :(

Ok, so after a few days without a nap last night he did what he did before - slept about 10hrs and then woke at 4.30am thinking it was the morning ::)  I mean for him 10hrs is a pretty long stretch - he did go back to sleep after I told him his sun wasn't on etc and then woke at 7.15am I don't know how long he was awake for at 4.30am but even so a pretty ok night.  Do I perservere with no nap and just *hope* he eventually realises he needs to sleep say 11.5hrs at night or what ???

I would. And if he's having a rough go, then give say a 30 min catnap in the middle of the day for him to recharge.

Hi Laura, I haven't been reading everything because you've been getting great advice from people who have BTDT and I haven't but I wonder, what if he doesn't NEED 11.5 at night?  I know all the health issues make for muddy waters but what if he's really low sleep needs?  I only say this because I have finally accepted this about Finn and recognize that even when we drop the nap, those long nights just aren't going to happen.  So this later bedtime thing has not been that pretty but it has shifted our day somewhat.  And he's still really getting the same sleep in 24 hrs, not super-extending his night.  He's not consistent so we can't make anything of it yet but I just have a feeling that the most we may ever get is 10.5 or 11 with no nap.  He's always a kid who is ahead of himself with all nap transitions and always behind in his ability to handle the A times that come with nap transitions so we always play survival mode whenever going through any transition until he catches up and life goes back to those 10 hr nights lol

(((hugs))) I'm not really sure I'm being productive here but I am always thinking about you and O :-)

what if he doesn't NEED 11.5 at night?
I have wondered this myself but I also know that he can't function properly without lots of tears on much less in 24hrs - but that may just be everything catching up with him.  I guess if with the no nap he continues to do a 10hr night then yes I will try moving bedtime back and see what happens I guess ???  The thing is he does go back to sleep after the 10hrs it's just it takes him a little while.

but I am always thinking about you and O :-)
Thank you :-*

(Oh and how did you get a nice pink border around your "team Liz"?)

Re: avatar - send Steffi a PM - I got it from her post on FB

Laura Finn is the same he is better behaviourally on more sleep although he's a pretty damn fine kid without but still we have an Angel when he's perfectly slept.  However, for whatever reason his body just doesn't need it.

If O is going back to sleep I think it's great but also wouldn't assume it means he 'needs' more sleep.  He may take more sleep because he can - it's a good skill to have!  But if he's naturally waking after a certain number of hours then it's something to consider.  I used to think Finn had a habitual wake time, never could decide if it was time vs. number of hours but now that we managed to shift our day I'm pretty sure it's the length of his night that is habitual.  He wasn't ready before for the long A times it took to get to a later bedtime - he's just always behind in that way.  Always has been - even since the CN dropping!
