14 month old still early waking
« on: February 02, 2011, 11:22:36 am »
Ok, for a good few weeks now my 14months old has been waking around 5.30am. Upon advice I have been trying to go from 2 to 1 naps and moving his morning nap out. His routine is now as follows:

Wake- 5.30am
Nap- 10am (he seems very tired most days by this time)
Wakes- 11.30am ish- he usually wakes himself
Nap- 2.30pm- I wake him at 3pm for the school run.

Even though we have been pushing his morning nap time, he still wakes early. Do you think I should just go for it and really start extending his morning awake time to get him closer to mid day, cutting down on the PM nap and just get him to 1 nap?

Our only trouble is that I have to have him up from PM nap by 3pm for the school run. We don't get back until 3.45- which seems too late for him to have a PM cat nap.

Any advice and thoughts would be much appreciated!
Thanks!
Jodie

You could try a short morning nap/long pm nap as they might help with the ew.  However, that might not work out with the school run.  I'm currently doing a long am nap/short pm nap but Lewis is a bit younger than your ds2 and I'm able to do it after the school run.  Another routine which was suggested to me was

Nap 1 - 10am - 1030am
Nap 2 - 130pm - 3pm

Would this work or would he not go down at those A times?

Thanks, this could definitely work for us I think. Does a shorter AM nap usually eliminate EW then?
I am just wondering though how you then transition to 1 nap? Is it a case of shortening the AM nap gradually, bringing the PM nap earlier slowly too? How do I eventually knock out the AM nap without him having to last out ages to get to his only nap?
Thanks!

It can help with ew as they're not having a nice long morning nap to catch up on the missed night sleep.  That's what I did with ds1 (who was an ew) and it defiantly helped.

As for the getting to one nap.......I know there are some different ways of doing it but when I did it with ds1 I did it just as you've described.  I kept cutting nap 1 shorter as needed and kept nap 2 long.  Then when he went to one nap we just did it at an earlier time than nap 2 had been.

Do you think it would also work to do:

Nap 1- 9.45-10.15am
Nap 2- 1.15-3pm

Or is this too early for am nap, and too much sleep overall? Only today for example he was super tired by 9.45 so I put him down then.

Thanks

I don't see a problem with it as long as again, he's not trying to catch up on night sleep by going down too early.  Have a bit of a play around and see what works out.   :-*

Well he woke this morning at about 6.15am- fingers crossed this wasn't pure cooincidence! It's still quite an early wake, but much more bearable than 5.30am!
I have done the same with a short AM nap today and longer PM, so lets see how it goes!
Thanks!
