What to give 8 month old 4 breakfast?
« on: February 05, 2011, 09:08:14 am »
My lo is 8 months and im not sure what else 2 give him for breakfast. He has weetabix or porridge with fruit. Is there other cereals he could have? Or anything else he could have, i feel he is getting board.

You can give anything you like  :).

Toast fingers, cheerios, others cereals softened with milk eg shreddies, shredded wheat, cornflakes.

You could do eggs, or cheese and meat for a more continental feel  ;), pancakes, smoothies, yoghurts

8 mths is a good age to start introducing more variety and textures so all of the above would be good for finger feeding.

My DD has multiple food intolerances so we do porridge, a fruit puree, some fruit pieces and something else as a finger food eg cornflakes, rice cakes, gluten free toast. DD is egg, gluten, dairy and soy free so variety is hard really.

What Liz said.  ;)

We do pretty much all those things too.  Lots of cereals with almond milk, and fruit.  Occasionally eggs, meats, pancakes.  Smoothies every day here.  Anything DS1 and I eat goes for DS2 as well.  :)

At 8 months, I'm not worrying too much about everything being soft... Jack has toast, here! (But he also has 5 teeth...)

We have fresh yoghurt every day here with fresh fruit (he loves orange segments, grapes, blueberries, apples, bananas, you name it!). We have american pancakes (I can get you a recipe, if you'd like!). We had omlettes this morning. He LOVES having some of my spinach/carrot/apple/banana/yoghurt smoothie (not as gross as it sounds!)!

I've shared this recipe (on BLW board) before, but here it is again! You can make some baby french toast by mixing an ounce or 2 of formula/breast or whole milk (fine before 1 year if cooked) with mashed banana, a splash of vanilla and a shake of cinnamon. Dip either side of a piece of bread in, and cook through on both sides! Cut into soldiers and let him enjoy!

'Al dente' veggies are good, so cooked a bit so they're not too hard, but not too soft and mushy either.  :)

Your wish is my command! I like American-style pancakes best, because they're fluffier and easier for LOs to eat! My dad's recipe is MIA, so I've been having to make due with some ones that I found on the net! (The website will let you switch from US measurements to metric, so don't be put off if it says "cups" and you haven't got any!)

This one is GORGEOUS, but calls for a bit more ingredients: Fluffy Pancakes

This one is just as good, and the ingredients are more readily available: Good Old-Fashioned Pancakes

Here's a few pointers on the perfect pancake (if you've not made American-style before!): (Tips for) Perfect Pancakes

And here is a list of translations from UK to American re: ingredients! Common Substitutions for American Ingredients

Hey, I made the french toast yesterday but I'm not sure what I did wrong.  It was kind of mushy.  I only used about 1 ounce of formula so should I have used more (could have been too much banana compared to the formula) or maybe cooked it longer or is that the way it is supposed to be?
He did eat a bit but he had more fun flinging pieces over my floor and wall lol

Hm! Sorry about that! My first thought is, was the bread in the milk mixture too long and soaked up too much liquid? Here is the original recipe, maybe that will help!

Egg Free French Toast with Bananas

1 ripe banana
3 fl oz (around 1/3 cup) milk (you can use breastmilk/formula for younger babies, although using cow's milk in cooking for your baby is acceptable after 6 months of age, provided there is no family history of cow's milk allergy)
pinch cinnamon
drop vanilla essence
whole-wheat bread

Place all the ingredients (except the bread) into a food processor and blend well.
Dip in pieces of bread, making sure the mixture coats them well on both sides.
Fry in a little unsalted butter or oil over a high heat until golden.

A good tip for french toast is to use slightly stale bread, or toast it first.  ;)

Thanks, I'll give it a try again and I"ll toast it a bit first.  I'm really good at making regular french toast lol

I've given F a bit of scrambled egg, plus egg cooked in things (like pancakes, french toast).

Why does he say no egg mukta, allergies?  Not even egg yolks?  I would think you could try yolks at least, hardboiled or scrambled.  But maybe he has other reasons for saying no eggs.

I've heard the no-egg thing too before 12 months as they are concerned it could lead to egg ellergy or something...

We've done omlettes and fried eggs (cooked through) with no problems

exactly its the egg allergy thing, but I have given him stuff like pancakes, waffles etc as DS2 wants to eat what DS1 does and only what he can eat by himself which really makes life for bfast limited, he does not like cereal :(

I think you would be fine to try eggs.  Maybe start with doing yolks only as I think they are less allergenic, and make sure they're well cooked.

Our doc told us no egg white until 1 year but the yolk was fine. We've tied hard boiled and scrambled. He much perfered the scrambled once I added a bit of cheese :)
