Cheated on my ED :-( Can I pump and dump? When should I do it?
« on: February 12, 2011, 20:30:42 pm »
How long does it take what you have eaten to reach the breast milk?

I've had a cr*p day, feeling sorry for myself, eaten a lot of cheese  :-[ DD2 is MPI although not quite as bad as she used to be (she doesn't react if I have the odd bit of hidden)

Wondering now if I can pump and dump in a few hours? She can have a bottle of nutramigen for her first night feed...

Any idea if this would undo some of the damage?

Oh and sorry if this is a dumb question but if I am dumping the milk I don't need to sterilise the pump do I??

Thanks

(((hugs))) Charli :-*

This is just MHO so take it fwiw, but I would pump and dump a couple of feeds.

In general, if you're starting from a normal diet and doing a dairy elimination, it can take 2 weeks to get everything out of your system.  BUT, you've been strictly eliminating dairy (so no buildup of protein in your system), she tolerates hidden (so minute amounts of protein are ok), and you ate cheese (not the same impact as having a big glass of straight cow's milk, especially since she can tolerate hidden).  So I would think that if you pump and dump at least 1, or 2-3 to be safe, you should be ok.

You wouldn't need to sterilize the pump to do a pump and dump, but I would be sure to give it a good wash after ;)  I hope this reply hasn't come too late for you!

Hey Vikki thanks for your reply :-*
I decided to pump and dump about 3 hours after I ate it, gave her formula when she woke up then bf her as normal about 8 hours later. She was having a bit of trouble with wind this morning but she has been fine since and most importantly has had a bm, which was always the problem when I did eat dairy-she got so constipated. Hopefully it won't do anymore damage.
And I know now it totally wasn't worth cheating, I didn't even enjoy it that much, weird hey!
Thanks again for the info, v useful to know xxx
