5.5 mo difficult to settle for naps - help with A times?
« on: February 17, 2011, 21:27:18 pm »
Hi
My 5.5mo LO is getting more difficult to settle for naps. Actually he is either really difficult to settle or really easy. When it's easy, I would just put him in crib and he would turn to his side, hug his lovey and doze off without my help. But other times it's really frustrating.

I usually put him in my carrier at around 1hr 40min into his A time. Since I'm currently unsure of what his A time is, I usually watch for his cues while I carried him around. When he starts to yawn, fuss and turn his head side to side, I would put him down in the crib. He would then mantra cried (actually it sounds more like talking), and roll around in the crib and I would stay by the crib and watch. He would always roll around till his head almost hit the slats and I would have to reposition him. When he sees me, he would let out a fake cry and then giggle. If I try to position him on his side (his usual sleeping position)", he would either giggle and turn to see me or cry harder. This could go on forever. Eventually since I'm afraid he would get OT, I would pick him up and rock him. He would always get mad and cry louder when I PU. When I PD, he would calm down and either turn to his side and doze off (on his own or with shush pat) or repeat the whole mantra cry and giggling bit. I would then need to PU/PD a couple times before he would sleep. It almost feel like I'm doing PU/PD to peeve and tire him off so he would sleep.

I really don't know what to do. It's getting really stressful. He also fights his catnap a lot more. What am I doing wrong? And what should I be doing? LO is able to self soothe for bedtime so why not naps?

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

I am going to follow along if that is ok as we are having the same problem with our DD, but mostly at BT. So would love to see what gets suggested. I have narrowed it down to either UT, OT or that she is in pain from teething, but not sure which! I am thinking more OT than anything else, could this be the case for your LO? Is he spirited by any chance?

Hi Bex09,
I'm also thinking OT. But could also be UT when I first put him down (hence the giggling) and quickly became OT when LO can't settle for sleep. How old is your LO and what's her A time?
According to the baby quiz, my LO is a textbook/angel (more textbook then angel) baby.

That is pretty much what I am starting to think is happening, in that she is UT when I put her down and then OT by the time she eventually then settles. Tonight when she started the crawling about I got her back up and sat for another 5 mins just chatting quietly to her and cuddling her, put her down again and she fell asleep no probs. So maybe a slight increase in A times is needed. My DD is 8.5 months and her A times are 3h 15 in the morning and 3h 30 in the afternoon.
