A rant >:(
« on: February 19, 2011, 00:45:43 am »
I got a call from daycare yesterday that Dylan had thrown up right after nap - his carer said she had never seen so much puke, his entire lunch an then some. In the 20m it took me to get there he threw up twice more, then threw up on me when I got there, and again as soon as we got home. Then twice more. No fever. I was nearly sure that something from lunch must have disagreed with him - no fever, the sudden and violent puking, and his relatively good mood in between bouts. I was assured that everything was safe for him, and that no other children were sick from it so it wasn't spoiled.

Well, now he's fine. Running around like a crazy man. So I called and said that something must have disagreed with him, could they please double check.

Lo and behold, the pepperoni said 'may contain traces of milk ingredients'.

I am livid. Fortunately he *just* threw up and nothing more serious. His contact reaction is hives and swelling so it could have been much worse.  If the daycare hadn't been SO good thus far I would consider finding a new one. But I don't know what to do as I don't want to get the cook in trouble (she goes out of her way all the time to make extra items for Dylan) but at the same time I don't want to minimize it and say 'dont worry, it's ok' when it most certainly is not.

Ugh.

 :o :o :o Wow......  :o :o :o

I wish I had something useful to say, and I may later when I'm not speechless. That time is not now, though. So glad he's OK!

Wow, that is really annoying adn scary all at the same time.

I would go and say: I really appreciate how everyone is always really vigilant and that is for sure why we have not had any issues thus far. This violent vomiting is an affirmation that he is really allergic to milk. If this is what happens with 'May contain traces of milk', imagine what can happen when real milk enters his system. Obviously even trace amounts are dangerous for him. Again, I appreciate the efforts thus far. Can everyone please remain vigilant and be made aware that even 'MCTOM' food has to be avoided in future as well. Please and thank you.

HUGS!!

Oh, Vikki. I'm stunned. And speechless. I cannot believe that happened to poor Dylan :( You must have been so scared. Your instincts were bang on...I surely think they will take this and be extra vigilant.

more hugs for you my friend.

Oh no Vikki! {{{hugs}}} for you and Dylan!

I can understand not wanting to get the cook in trouble, but if they have agreed to keep him allergen free then they need to do exactly that!!! Here I am lucky because really according to the regulations they could make me bring all of Spencer's food, but they are doing it 100%(which took me getting mad and explaining that for some kids, egg is egg, even if it is baked into something!)  They are even on board for gluten free, which is above and beyond anything I expected.

Thanks ladies - DH thinks I'm overreacting so I'm happy to have the support. We actually got into a bit of a discussion about it, until I said 'They fed him something that could have killed him! I know that's extreme, but he has an epipen for a reason.' I think that shocked him a bit (which was my intention) and he saw where I was coming from and agreed that we should speak to the director of the centre.

And thank you, thank you, thank you DI for that response. I think I'm going to spend the weekend memorizing it :-* It says exactly what I was thinking - praising them for their vigilance thus far, and making my expectations and the dangers clear without laying blame. It's perfect :)

What an awful situation for you. I would take the same stance with our nursery - they also go out of their way to adapt meals to suit Olly - but clearly your nursery are now very much aware of the consequences of not double and triple checking everything as they have seen first hand what happens.

What an awful situation! Hugs!

I agree with what "DI" said and I have had accidents myself, we all know how hard it is. However, when you talk to them I think you should remind them how serious your situation is (just like you had to remind DH)

Hope your LO is ok now.
