What age did you wean NFs?
« on: February 19, 2011, 12:44:48 pm »
DD1 dropped her NFs at 4months but DD2 still needs at least one Nf.  She has recently reverted back to 2nfs and am thinking it is b/c of a GS.  I was planning to wean the feeds once solids were fully established. I know she doesn't need them as she is drinking plenty during the day.(36ozs)

Wondering what age did you wean the Nfs and how did yo do it? Is cold turkey the best?

This response is going to depend on if the LO is FF or BF.  You are now only FF now right?

We didn't need NFs after 6 months.  But I do think each LO is different.

We got rid of DD's nightfeed around 8.5 months (bottle fed, no DF) by reducing the amount in the bottle by 1oz every 3 days. When it got below 4oz she slept through one night so after that we just offered water when she woke. She wasn't too impressed the first night but after about 3 nights she gave up waking. She did have a feed for a few nights when she was about 10 months after nearly a week of vomiting but she gave that up herself after she caught up.

she is ff. Not sure if I should eliminate them now or see if she does it in her own.

back again.
Just wondering is it best to wean one feed first or do all cold turkey?  Do I wean the earlier one first?

At 4 months, I just set a time that I wouldn't feed him before (2:30) after he had done it on his own numerous times. Then I pushed that time further and further back the older he got, and when we got to around a 5am NF we just went cold turkey with it. He was a little over 6months at the time of the cold turkey.

I remember you posting a while back that she was consuming around 40oz of formula. Is she still taking as much formula as she was prior to you starting her on solids?

She is drinking about 36oz in a 24hr period.  I made a rule not to feed before 2am.
Her last feed is 7pm and would normally have another feed at 12am then again around 5am.  No df.

Sorry - I'm a bit confused! You say you have made a rule not to feed before 2am but she normally has a feed at 12am - does that mean from now on you won't feed before 2am? If that's the case I would keep the 2am ish feed for now and work on pushing the 5am feed to wake up time. If she can go from 7pm to 2am then she should be able to last from 2am to 7am wake up.

If you can shift the feeds on you can then eliminate the 2am feed by reducing oz or watering the feed down.

I recently made a rule not to feed before 2am.  ;D
To shift the 5am feed, do I just continue with pu/pd?

Yes just resettle however you normally do until she goes back to sleep but keep your normal wake up time.

Good luck!

thanks Laura.

Last night she had woke up on her own at 2am and drained 7ozs, then woke up again at 6:50am and wasn't interested in her morning bottle. I have a feeling this girls Nf is learnt hunger.
Now I just have to get the courage to continue with no nfs.

You've come so far ( I follow many of your posts :) ) against some tough sleep issues, you can totally do this one too!

I agree, if she's consuming 36oz on top of two solid meals a day, calorically/nutritionally I'd say she doesn't need a NF, it's a habit.
