do you need to burp your LO after solid food?
« on: February 26, 2011, 09:34:32 am »
Hi - maybe this is a silly question, the subject line says it all! Also, if you give infacol before milk feeds should you also give it before solids, even if only a tiny portion? Or are most LOs ready to stop infacol by this stage anyway? I've just been hesitant to wean DS off it in case I rock the boat!

I think by the time he's ready for solids you should be ok to stop the infacol, or at least you don't need to give it before solids feeds.  I've never had to burp either of mine after eating solids.  They are not sucking air back the same way they would with a milk feed.

Before weaning, its best if the baby is anke to.sur unaided, supporting themselves up straight whilst they eat, this helps them be able to swallow properly, and also helps them digests properly etc. Therefore your LO should be able to burp himself.

I've never had to burp mine after solids either. In fact because they are sitting upright for eating (and generally of course by about 6 months) they tend to get quite good at burping themselves!

You can try cutting back on the infacol too and see what happens - when you are ready of course ;).

FWIW, I used to put a few drops (not the full recommended dose) of Simethicone in all my 5.5 mo bottles before a feed, and last week stopped cold turkey bc we went out of town and I did not mention it to my in laws who were watching the kids.

The lack of the simethicone had absolutely no effect on her.  She has no increased gas or discomfort.  Basically, she has grown out of the problem, and I was probably just using it to make myself feel better.

So, try cutting back and see what happens.  Use the money you save to buy more baby food, right?
