Overstimulation?
« on: February 28, 2011, 02:07:51 am »
I posted awhile ago about how C tends to have problems settling at night. Well, he has gotton better....overall. However, I notice and anticipate that if we go out for dinner or go anywhere in the evening with C he does NOT go to bed easily. He wakes every 15-45 minutes and cries. He does this 2-3 times before he finally falls asleep for the night. Is this overstimulation? If so, what can we do so that we can go out for dinner or enjoy some time out with him?

Hi Julie

Just from personal experience, and from what I've heard from friends they do grow out of it eventually. Not much of an answer but we started going out earlier. We just had to, but tbh we've only ever done one supper out and it was a disaster, and lunchtime or late afternoon worked so much better. It's a sacrifice but only for a short time. I'm sure in a couple of years the girls would be able to handle a supper but for now we just don't.

Being out at the end of the day can be a big thing for lo's. They're just too tired to cope with all of the new things they're seeing. If you think of how you feel after driving at the end of the day instead of the beginning it would be a lot more tiring to do it at the end of the day.

Well, I'm thinking it isn't overstimulation. DH has always put C down at night and he frequently has problems. He won't settle without being rocked to sleep, which I believe has become a prop. I'm not sure how to deal with this or advise DH. C does so well at self soothing during the day (when I put him down) that anyone can put him down. I just don't know how to get him to self sooth at night. Any tips?

Or maybe this is EASY related? Should I ask get some advice on my EASY? Last night took 1 1/2 hours of crying to get him to sleep :( He woke 30 minutes after falling asleep.

Yes it could be EASY related. Post his current EASY and we can take a look. Could he be getting OT by the end of the day?
Does he settle for DH for naps too? Or do you think he is reacting to DH possibly?

Welllllll, funny turn of events....DH started leaving his door open with the hall light on for 30 minutes and he has done great! He's been actually doing well for 2 nights so I hope the trend continues. No crying at all!
