when can you move to set naps?
« on: February 28, 2011, 20:13:36 pm »
I am just wondering at what age is reasonable to move to set naps? Also, when you do I am assuming some OT is to be expected. Do you move the naps at all or just keep them the same and hope that baby will adjust?
thanks.

I think we went to set nap times around 8 months - I just chose what nap times I thought were reasonable based on what I knew about his A times and stuck to them - within about 15 mins.

thanks. Owen will be 6 months if a couple of days and I wasn't sure if it was too early. He is a bad napper to begin with but he works well on a schedule for feeding. I thought maybe it would help? (I am drawing at straws and hope anything will help.)

Hi....I've done set naps with both my LO's with great results! Both went onto set nap times at around 8 mths when they went onto 2 naps.

Is your LO on 2 or 3 naps?

well, that is part of the problem I am trying to sort out. He usually takes 4-5 30-45mins naps. I am really struggling to get him to take longer naps. It has happened, like twice. He def still needs the cn though.

Trouble is, the younger they are the more susceptible to OT and the harder the OT is to sort out. They can get madly OT and stay madly OT for a really long time, you know? That would be my worry about going to set nap times if he's only napping 30-45 mins - how to choose what timings would be appropriate.

Hmmm, agree with Anna about the short naps & OT.

What's his routine look like ATM?

P.S: Anna, congrats on the pg!

I know. I think he is really OT a lot, like all the time. I am just trying to figure something out that will work... I am going to wait until he is over the 6month GS spurt, which I am expecting any day, to do anything. ds1 was a great sleeper so never had these issues to deal with. ds2, great eater, horrible sleeper!
his rountine is pretty wonky right now.
wake and eat 7:15-7:45
I usually put him down 1hr45 mins after he wakes. Sometimes he had a 30 min nap, sometimes 45 mins. I will then put him down approx 1hr30mins after he wakes.
Eating is always 3.75-4hrs apart and bd is usually around 7-7:30 (depending on when he wakes from last nap.) I tend to not wake him as he doesn't get a lot of sleep.
he did have one good day last week
eating every 4 hrs, with 3 naps, 1hr30, 1hr15, 1hr15, 2hr A time.

I'd try pushing his A times out a bit and see if that helps. 2.25hrs for the first (assuming a reasonable night sleep), and 1hr45-2hrs after a short nap. Is he an independent sleeper? You could perhaps try set A times for 2-3 days (2hrs?) and see if that does anything for him?

Thanks Sianie! :-*

I was thinking of trying to push the A times a bit. I did 2hr A times for a few days, and got a really OT baby. Forgot to mention that bd is usually a disaster unless he has had a lot of naps. It can take a couple of hours to get to bed and sometimes not until the df until he settles. For all naps he is independent, bd I sometimes resort to rocking as at some point I just want him to sleep, although it is never really good sleep cause he just squirms in my arms. (I used to have to rock for all naps, so I have gotten rid of that at least. :)

It's a tough one. My guy really didn't grow into longer naps until he was passed six months, no matter how much I tweaked. And then he replaced the short naps with EWs  ::)

I really don't want that! I am going to try and stretch his A time tmw and see. I usually put him down for first nap after 2hrs, so I will try to add 10mins. Will keep u posted. I am thinking from what you guys are saying, I will wait for the set naps for a little bit.

so I put him down after 1hr45min, he fell asleep quietly after about a total of 2hrs A time.. and woke 35mins later? boo!
the worst part is it is 4:10 right now... I can't keep him up until 7, but another nap would mean he would go to bed too late. what to do?

I'd do an early bedtime. 6.30 latest.
What's the shortest/longest A times you've tried? I'm sure you've done this but whether you decide to lengthen or shorten or use set times, you need to give it a few days before making a judgement about whether it's working.
