Hi Sharon, just offering you some hugs.  I definately agree with Laura, the doctor should see him and perhaps a second opinion?

Just adding that the only time my lo doesn't take the bottle, is when she has an ear infection.  I am sure they have checked his ears, just throwing that out there.

Hello, thank you for all the hugs and kind words, it really does mean a great deal to me. Okay, we have returned from three days and two nights in hospital. They had him on a feeding tube for twelve hours so that they could get 140ml down him every three hours. He was weighed and had already put on weight - more than he had in the past three weeks! They ran blood test and more blood test and there is absolutely nothing that they can find wrong with him, which is great but also infuriating as we don't know why he is having these feeding problems.

The widwives took over and changed the teat, bottle, formula and feeding position. He is now taking the bottle every three hours and seems to be on the up. They changed him to soya milk (Isomil), I prop him up on pillows and look at him while he feeds and the teat is a NUK. I have to feed him now for the first time since we are home and I am rather nervous. I am also shattered as there were nurses, doctors and midwives coming and going constantly as well as screaming sick children keeping us up. Anyway, I am so thankful to be home but also nervous of things to come.

The doctor has told us to prepare for him maybe doing the fasting thing again, as we haven't found out the cause for his feeding issues. I have made a follow-up appointment for next Wednesday and hopefully he continues to feed well till then. He doesn't appear to have any problems with the cow's milk formula but rather, we think, the taste. The doctor doesn't believe that a child would fast for twelve hours because he doesn't like the taste of the milks so who knows what lies ahead.

Thank you again for all your support and I will keep you posted.
Sharon

I wonder if you should post this in the health forum too.

:) We've been home for 24 hours and things continue to progress well. It is wonderful to have a baby that feeds every three hours and fits into the 3 hour EASY routine so well. Last night we were a bit out with the routine and he got overtired and then wouldn't feed. I started to get really worried but then he took 180ml at the 11pm DF. He has taken 110ml twice today and at the last feed he was very hungry and took 180ml. I am still very nervous before each feed and keep waiting for things to go wrong. I am willing this to be the end of our feeding problems. I just can't believe that all our problems could so easily be solved by changing the teat shape, feeding position and formula. Can my baby be that fussy?

He has also stopped soiling his nappy so much but when he does it is very dark brown and thick goo. I'm not sure what that is an indication of.
The hospital gave us some disposable NUK bottles and I have eventually located some locally. My husband has just popped out to get them.

Thank you again for all your posts, ideas, support and help. I will continue to keep you updated and hope that he carries on feeding so well.

There is one bottle my dd just wont feed off of.  And it was the first one I tried. I have no idea, I even tried it again last week and nope, she just wont have it.  They know what they want even from birth!

And I totally can tell when I switched formula on her she did not like it as much. She ate 1/2 as much consistently.

I am so glad to hear the progress he is making!

:-\ Well, he's definitely extremely fussy! The disposable bottles the hospital gave us are NUK glass with latex teats. The only NUK bottles my husband could find were plastic with silicone teats. We tried to feed him yesterday at 6.30pm using the new bottles and he just wouldn't take the feed. After a perfect day on a three hour EASY routine, I couldn't understand why he wouldn't take the feed and presumed it was as it had been the night before. I DF him at 7.45pm and then again at 11pm and he fed well. This morning he refused the feed again and so I changed him back to the old bottles and he took the feed. The little fuss pot! We are now going to search for latex teats. There is a warehouse distributor that we have found but they are closed over the weekend. Hopefully they have the teats or can gets some to us super quick. We are also having difficulties locating the one formula that he likes. Why are these things so difficult? I am just so glad that he is feeding that these other issues aren't that serious.

When I picked my DS up this morning he did feel heavier. I can't wait to weigh him and see how much weight he has gained. Glad to know that my DS isn't the only fussy one out there. Thank you!

??? It appears that the honeymoon period is over and he is starting to feed less and less again. I can't believe that we are going down this road again. He has taken some milk at each feed but almost half the amount he had yesterday. He really doesn't seem interested in feeding and that is with the disposable bottle and teat he likes. I am feeling so low again. I just want to know when this will be over. I am so worried we are going to land up in hospital again. Surely this has to go beyond a fussy feeder! I am also dreading the next feed as it is the one he has always struggled with. If things haven't improved by tomorrow I will call the doctor again and get some advice from him. I am so angry and frustrated with this situation. I just want him to feed and grow, which seems like such a simple thing for a baby to do.

How are his nappies now? Did the hospital see them when they were very dark and like goo - that doesn't sound "normal" to me, but I guess could be the formula change :-\.
