"Look, Mum, here's the deal. Fridays I need some time to do X, Y, and Z. It's a lot easier to do them by myself so I can spend more quality time with O when he is here. These chores won't do themselves, and nobody else comes in to do them, so it's not an option, plus O enjoys being with his own mates."

If your mum wants to volunteer to do those things for you. having heard your stance, then yippee. If not, she has no business making those parenting decisions for you or pressuring you that way IMO.

Well....the decision has been taken out of my hands!  The preschool can only take him Tuesday morning and Friday afternoon!  So I have my answer!  Ideally I would've rather he'd have done the fri morn so we could've had the afternoon to do stuff so they've said they can change him to a Fri morn at the end of May.

that's good!  but...  what about the part with your mom?  Can you just hint that you are thinking of paying her 1 morning less unless she can do the cleaning/ironing? ;)  and use your sweetest voice???

Yeah, that.

No-one can expect to be paid when they don't work, not even your mum.  :-\
