MPSI and teething biscuits or rice rusks
« on: March 10, 2011, 17:16:44 pm »
My DD is MPSI and a silent refluxer.  The MPSI doesn't seem to be severe (at least not an allergy it just seems to bother her tummy).  She is now eating solids and teething pretty badly.  I've been looking at the packaged teething biscuits and rice rusks and everything has skim milk powder in it.  The organic rice rusks don't list milk as an ingredient but say it may contain traces.  I'm just wondering if anyone has been able to give these to their MPSI baby with any success.  If not, does anyone have a recipe for homemade teething biscuits with no milk or soy?

Hi, am sure there must be some recipes out there. I am sure I was given one but that would have been gluten free too. Am off out in a mo but will hunt round tomorrow for you.

Whereabouts in the world are you??

That would be great.  I'm in Canada and I'm getting very annoyed at everything saying may contain traces of milk even though it isn't listed.  I think they are just covering themselves just in case but that makes it terrible for people/kids with allergies.  I've found one company that makes baby stuff that is entirely dairy, soy and wheat free but I'm sure it costs a fortune :)

you can make your own

wholemeal flour
yeast
water

add half a teaspoon of yeast to a cup of flour and mix in warm water till it makes a dough... kneed and roll into long fingers and back till hard

no milk nothing bad if you want them gluten free replace the  wholemeal flour for your usual flour

Ive eaten them and they are okay they make good teething biscuits and a good finger food and if you make them long enough they work well for back teeth too

That sounds good Louisa.  Do you need to let the yeast dissolve in the water first?

I've also found the following recipe I plan to try.

1 cup of Rice Flour
1 Cup of pureed cooked apple (Steam it until it’s tender, then mash with a wand mixer)
Enough water to make a stiff dough.

The Recipe

Combine the flour and pureed apple and add enough water to mix up a stiff dough.
Roll it out on a floured board into long, thin sausages
Slice into rusks and line on a floured tray
Bake in a low oven (150 C) until they are hard.
Store in an airtight container
Ideas for apple substitutes could be pureed pear, banana, pumpkin, carrot, parsnip, brocoli, blueberries or a combination of your baby’s favourite fruit and veg. Brocolli and Apple have been a hit in this house.

I am not sure if my mum bought them for us before we worked out L was MSPI or not but we had Bickiepegs, she didn't like them anyway though  :P If it is just for something for LO to suck/chew on have you seen the Organix flavoured rice cakes, they do them in apple or orange flavours or plain and they were a huge hit  ;)

Sorry I can't find it now. I think it was flour, water and a mashed veg ie sweet potato.

Here are a few recipes though

I was going to suggest the Organix or Goodies ranges if you have them where you are as they are good for snacks.

Thanks everyone.  I just went out today and found the Healthy Times teething biscuits.  I gave her one today and she went nuts for it.  Should would pull it out of her mouth and look at it and then jam it back in her mouth.  She got upset if she couldn't pick it up after she dropped it.  Frantic almost  :P  They are just oat flour, molasses, barley flour, safflower or sunflower oil, natural flavour (I assume maple) and vitamin e.  I think I'm going to try to make my own similar to these but I'm also going to try the ones with the fruit or veg as I like the idea of getting extra fruit and veg into her.

i just wrote this on another post but thought you might like it too :-*

my bub LOVES these
http://www.organics4kids.com/
not sure if you can order from overseas tho...

also made these before i found the ready made ones
1 cup of well-cooked potato (could also use rice)
1 tsp canola oil
1.5 cups rice flour (a gf blend is fine too, i often used a mix of potato/rice/tapioca flour)
*can also add a small amount of tolerated veggies, i used green beans

- process ingredients (food processor) until makes a thick dough and shape into 'fingers'
- bake for 20 mins
- cool
- microwave for 2 mins (this helps get rid of extra moisture to make harder)
- leave to harden before use

also for rice cakes, i just buy the large adult ones (100% rice) as all the baby ones here have something in them that my LO cant eat.

Thank you for that.  I'm not sure if I can get the packaged ones but I'll look into it.  I'm glad to have more recipes as I've been making all of her food anyway.
