Night wake and not eating breakfast
« on: March 17, 2011, 15:20:01 pm »
Hi, I am not sure if this is the right forum to post my problem but hope I can get get some help here.

My little boy is 5 months + 1 week, currently on 4 hours EASY so we have milk feed 4 times a day plus 1 night feed.

Ideally we would like him to have dropped his night feed by now, but the bigger problem is that he doesn't drink much at 7am, even 11am is a struggle to get 150ml in him. I think the night feed is affecting his day time feeds and I would like him to take full feeds in the day and not at night, currently his average milk intake is like this:
7am - 60-90ml
11am - 100-160ml
3pm - 200ml
6.30pm- 200-240ml
Night feed - 200ml (this is full bottle but he can easy drink more if we offer it to him)
He wakes at random time, any time between 12-4am and he takes a full 200ml bottle within 5 mins so I believe he is genuinely hungry. How do I wean him off?
1/ cold turkey and not feed him at all
2/ offer cool boiled water
3/ gradually reduce milk ie 150ml then 100ml.. And so on till he drop it completely
Which method works better? Any advice would be greatly appreciated

You could try gradually reducing the milk.  I am sorry I don't know ml, but I would say 3 ounces every 2-3 nights and see if that helps.

Gradually reducing is the way to go.

He's pretty young to have no night feed at all, but that's not impossible. I would just take it slow and be careful about it. It's possible that he may need a small feed to get through.

Thanks both. We have reduced his milk by 20ml last night (2/3 of an oz) and he drank so much better this morning, he managed 150ml rather than the 60-90ml, I am very pleased! Will carry on for few nights then reduce again slowly and gradually, hopefully he will drop the night feed all together and take full feed in the day. Thanks again
