Darkening the room
« on: March 19, 2011, 16:55:21 pm »
(Feel free to move this, wasn't sure where to put it....)

I've had tinfoil on the nursery windows (and the windows of any houses we visit!) since we started BWing when Austin was about 4m old.  So he's really used to (dependent on?) the room being dark.  Now we've set up the house to sell and I had to take the tinfoil down for showings.  I have blinds in there but it's easily twice as bright as it used to be.  He's really struggling with falling asleep!  He's just chatting and yelling and sounds WIDE awake.

Any ideas of how I can darken the room that would be easy to take up and down?  Or should I try GW an try to kind of wean this like a prop?

We pin doubled black material up around the windows, any bit of light coming through just means she will sing  :P

Yes!  Argh!  Ok, so where did you actually pin the material to?  I'm also worried about making more holes in the wall since I want things to look just right. :P

We pin in through the wallpaper but maybe you could pin it to the topof the curtain rail so you can't see the holes!!

And did you just get regular black fabric, like from a crafts store?

Still singing and shouting - ahhh!! I'm about to be on my own with him when DH leaves until my mom gets here and I'm too tired myself for an OT kid! ::)

Kate,

Just wondering - could you replace the blinds? I went to Blinds To Go and got the one that coils up at the top. One of those old schools ones ;) And then put curtains overtop to make it look pretty. However, that could be time consuming. ::) And another investment to a house that you're selling.

Katt does have a great suggestion.

Hmm. I'm sure I could, Sarah, but like you said, I'd rather not put a ton of time and money into this house. ::)  The Roman blinds I have in there are 'room darkening' (so said the package when I bought them when I was pg and setting up the room!) but that's really a joke.  The tinfoil was the perfect solution until now!  Hopefully the fabric will work and/or we'll sell quickly and I can get the foil back up!

Can you get gro anywhere blinds in the US?? They suction onto the glass and do a really decent job.

I'm another fan of the Gro Anywhere blind - would definately recommend it if you can get hold of one in the US.  It uses suction caps to fit to the window so is really easy to put up and take down. It's great for taking away on holiday too! x

I actually tried to find those way back when and coudn't. :(  Was going to have to pay shipping from the UK.  Such a bummer - that's exactly what I need!  Actually, saying that, I wonder if I couldnt get some suction cups and make up something similar.  Hmm....Well I got some fabric and pushpins. I'll try that for now and if not I might try the suction cups! ;)

Oooh, will look next time I get to one.

I ended up at Joanns and got some black fleece.  Doubled over and pinned with pushpins (into the wood but what do I care - we're moving! Ha!) under the lame blinds and it worked like a charm.  Phew!  Also, since the lame blinds are Roman shades, the fleece actually tucks perfectly into the shade as it goes up so I don't even have to take it down for showings!  And Austin can have light in his room between sleeps for the first time in probably a year - ha!  I think this is even better than the tinfoil!

Another BW save. ;)  Thanks, Katt!!  :D
