Need help understanding my litttle 'grump' !!
« on: March 20, 2011, 11:09:00 am »
I'm just doing an observation day today.

Miller is 6 months old and i think hes a 'grump' ( well i'm pretty sure he is !)

I noticed our A time....doesnt seem to last long before he starts growling at me !!

Hes cutting a tooth at the mo so it was a disturbed night.

He got up at 715...had a BF top up.

He was only playing for about an hour before he started growling constanmtly.

His A comprised of 'jumperoo' and playing on the playmat with a couple of toys ( with me )

Is there something i should be doing to stimulate him more ??

I just cant read his growls ???xx

He awoke after 1.5hrs sleep ....( 945 am until 1115 )...i left him in his cot for 15mins to see if he would go back off but he didnt.

Trouble is....i've fed him...but know he is just growling at me again and rubbing his eyes ??

What do i do ?

Should i have gone back in ti him and tried to gewt him back down ??

When he wakes he seems WIDE awake and gets annoyed if i try and make him sleep again ???

Hi hun,
Sorry you haven't received any replies yet. How are things going?

Would you like to write out your EASY?

When they're teething, I find they get tired quite easily ..but aren't able to nap/sleep properly. It gets better when the tooth finally cuts the surface. Have you tried any pain medication?

I'm sure its cut the surface now......his sleep is still really disturbed tho !

We have only just really started trying to do an EASY....but this is how it seems to be going.

E - 7am up and BF
A - 8am Solids ( by 830 he seems to be getting tired but will fight me to fall asleep .....I am still rocking to sleep BTW....we are going to try asnd tackle pU/PD this weekend when OH is off )
S - 930 sleep ( this can last from 30 mins to 2 hrs )

E - 11 - BF
A - 1145 - solids
S - 1pm - Sleep ( sometimes he either completely misses this or like yesterday had 25mins !)

E - 3pm - BF
A - 5pm solids
     6pm bath and wind down
S - 730

Activity times he seems to start growling very quickly ...well after about an hour . Not sure if we need to change his activities ???xx

Thanks for your help xxx

Hi hun,
Hmm your EASY doesn't look too off course. It looks good.

Let's talk more about what he does during a feed - is getting good feeds?
What about the solids that he's getting - are they agreeing with him?

Sleep wise - are you implicating a wind down that is consistent before each nap/sleep

I know I asked you this before, sorry to ask again, have you tried any pain medication? If not pain medication, have you tried anything more organic or natural to help him with his pain?

When he wakes at 30 mins from a nap - do you do anything to try and extend his naps?

Finally, his second A time IF he gets a good 1.5 hour nap or more could probably be more than 2.5 hours or, at the very least, be 2.5 hours. Usually A times get longer as the day progresses. However, if he only napped 30 minutes then the next A time needs to be dramatically lower.

Thanks for the reply chic,

Firstly, feeds.....i am trying to wean fully onto formula.....he only seems to take about 4 oz a time ( sometimes more but not often). Obviously when i BF i have no idea what he takes.....i put him on both boobs and feed til he decideds hes had enough ). Solids.....seems to be doing ok ! We've been at it properly for about 3 wks....i am trying 3 meals a day....and i reckon hes having around 2 tblespoons a meal.

Wind down time.....Hmmmm....i suppose not really.....when i see him getting tired i pick him up and we cuddle ( whilst bouncing round the room like tigger ¬!!!!). I have tried taking him to his room....sitting him on my knee for a short while before beginning the bouncing ritual !

A time......TBF...his 2nd A time is probably easy 2.5 hrs. Miller fights this 2nd S and like i said sometimes completely misses it or has at around 4! If this happens he usually goes to bed an hour early.

Today hes been with my mum ( i've been on a keep in touch day with work )....he had a 40 min sleep between 2 & 3....he was knacked by 530 so i bathed him and he was falling asleep on my shoulder.

Not sure if you read my other posts. My OH is off this weekend so we are going to try PU/PD and keeop him in his OWN bed ALL night. I might even go cold turkey with the BF so i dont use it as a crutch anymore !¬!!!!!xxx

Hi, just two quick thoughts in case you weren't aware that may be helpful info.

1. If he does take a short nap (anything less than about an hour or so---so definitely those 30 min. naps) the next length of time he is awake for should be rather short or he'll get overtired and not be able to sleep well on the following nap or bedtime.

2. Count the time he wakes in the morning and from naps from the moment he opens his eyes, not the moment YOU go and take him from his crib. If his eyes are open, he is awake and this should be counted in his awake time. You may be exceeding his awake time unknowingly and letting him get overtired (esp. if he's teething and more tired than usual)

HTH.

I have to run now but will be back to see if I have any more to add. :)

Hey there,
Just stay consistent with whatever you do. Ensure that his A times are appropriate with his naps - shorter if he gives you a short nap. He'll get incredibly OT if his A times continue to get longer as the day progresses and that may also contribute to his wakings at night.
Take a look at the routines and plan a good wind down - something you would want to do down the road when he's older. Is bouncing something you see yourself doing when he's 9 months or a year old? Just things to keep in mind :)

Having a feed at night is also normal at his age so if he does wean his feeds at night, do ensure that a bottle is ready for him just in case it is hunger related :)
