To be honest, when I take Murray to the dietician they tend to just listen to what he is eating and ask for an overview of what kinds of foods he is eating.  I think they are concerned that he is eating the right kinds of foods (as he is on dairy free trial their main concern is he is getting enough calcium).  When we were figuring out what his food issues were I didn't find them that useful but now we know the issues (through looking at his food and reactions over time) they can advise on what is suitable to feed him etc.

I see the dietician as more of a check Murray is not missing major food groups, etc and the appointments are for their records than for us!!

Louisa, there aren't many that know about sals I think. Here alot know about them because the RPAH deit that focusing on food chemicals like sals was developed in this city, the elimination diet handbook is circulated to many GP's too so you will hear GP's talking about food intolerances  and food chemicals here.

I think you could easily let them save face by saying quite clearly that you "know" you children have salicylate sensitivities as you have completed careful food challenges and eliminations on yours and their diets. And that you inderstand that it is a little known area, and thet you anticipate that any questions you have about this may not be able to be answered today.

If they are open to it, you can then refer them to the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital allergy unit website and the ELIMINATION DIET handbook that can be bought from there, the Fed up food intolerance network and  as well as this one:

This is good, but if you don't feel comfortable for any reason then you could just list the main food concerns or bring a list with you to show that the things on the list are the ones most sensitive to your LO.  I think Murray may be sensitive to sals but didn't know that until now!!  I just told the dietician which foods were an issue to him and that we avoided them, and she was fine with it.

Shame more health professionals are not as aware about food issues ... my friend trained as dietician a couple of years ago so will ask her if they get any training on them ....

Thanx Eloise

The thing is we have had issues with tomatos which we thought were just a lone issue but we have had issues with all high sals we have tried now so need to cut ALL high -very high sals

and same with Alyssa I didnt notice peanuts were high untill other day i thought peanuts was a seperate

So theres a looooooooooooong list which we have to cut

although the dietion who told us what turned out to be Sal poo was just toddler poo is now gone so I have more hope

I think I might print out a list of what we are avoiding AND the allergyuk thing as well as then its more official and ill make a note of that to mention they can check it out them selves

The paediatrician we saw told us that it was just toddler diarrheao and it is normal and most babies outgrow it; the only useful thing she did was refer us to the dietician.  Fortunately last time we saw the paed it was a different one who actually listened to us (the last one wrote a referral letter to the dietician and EVERY statement was the opposite of what we said!!!)

Let us know how the appointment goes :)

Well she had heard of sals which made it ALOT easier, she said she has alot of info on them and if she had of knnown she would of brought it down with her, only thing she hadnt done is delt with them in peadiatrics as she has only recently started working within pead dietics
