How do i drop catnap?
« on: March 31, 2011, 12:46:12 pm »

Hello!

My LO is 7 months in a weeks time, and i feel he is ready to drop the cat nap, as his A time is 2.75- 3 hrs. The problem is he wakes around 6 in the morning, which means his first nap is around 9am. he naps from 1-1.5 hrs. If he takes a 1.5 nap, i put him down again for his pm nap at 1.30. if he takes an hour nap, i put him down slightly earlier. his pm nap is about the same as well.
This means, the latest he sleeps to is 3pm, but often it's 2pm. His bedtime is 7pm, and there isn't enough time to put him down for a catnap- he's just not tired enough for it. But if he has no catnap, its a very long A time til bedtime....so what ive been doing to wake him after one hour so he has 3 x 1 hr naps. i don't think this is any good though as i will need to transition him to 2 naps at some point.

I know the issue is that he wakes at 6am- if his wake time is closer to 6.30-7am then the rest of the days timings would work itself out. He is asleep from 7pm right through to 6am, which is a good 11 hr stretch without waking, so i just don't think there is anything that can be done to get him to sleep a bit longer (unless there is?).

Does anyone have any ideas what i can do? do you think i should try push his first am nap to 9.30?

You could gradually cut the catnap down to get him through to bedtime and/or start extending A times so the last one before bed doesn't end up being too long.  Just be careful of OT during the transition period.
