what dairy substitutes to use on cereal & in cooking???
« on: March 31, 2011, 13:06:42 pm »
Ok ladies I'm new to all of this allergy/intolerance business.  GP thinks my LO could have some sort of milk intolerance & is setting in motion for us to try either a soy or hypo-allergenic milk.

He's 7 months old & so I realise I'm also going to need to cut dairy from his solids too.  I've been using whole cow's milk on his breakfast & in cooking (if needed), plus unsalted butter & cheese in in cooking.

So my question's are.....what the heck do I put on his weetabix/porridge/cereal???  Do I just use the new formula or is there some other milk I can use????  And what do I use instead of unsalted butter in cooking?  Do I just skip the butter altogether or am I safe to use oil or any other substitute eg margarine????

If anyone can spare a few minutes to point me in the right direction, it'd be much appreciated.

Thanks.xx

new formula is best, you dont really want to go down soy with a baby boy tbh

There is rice/oat milk but thats not very good nutritionally but will do at a push

Theres dairy free spreads such as vitalite or shops own ones they are usually sunflower oil basked

At 7 months I would prob use formula milk in cooking as Louisa says.

Pure do a good range of dairy free margarines in most supermarkets I think, about £1.49 but I buy Sains own brand at 99p!

Thanks for the tips ladies

I read something along these lines earlier.  Is this right that there's research that its not so good for baby boys as it mimics the female hormone oestrogen & so can affect when they go through puberty, & also risks of cancer, thyroid problems & heart disease in later life????????

I'm not particularly keen on using a soy based formula since I've read that often MPI babies can also have trouble with soy anyway.  I already said this to my GP so I'm hoping he'll just give us a HA formula instead.  & if the above is true, then I definitely don't want it! ::)

Can you get the rice/oat milk in UK supermarkets or do you need to go to a specialist health food shop??  Don't think I've ever seen it.

I dont know about all that, our pead just said about it can possibly cause growth problems in males because of oestrogen because it occurs naturally in the plants, they dont KNOW what happens as they cant test

I think i said about it somewhere else too but i didnt need details because well Alyssas a girl lol

The 2 times I have been caught out with dairy are salt and vinegar crisps, and sliced meats (ham, etc) - not all have lactose in them but some do!

I find the "free from" section is mainly gluten free not dairy! Surprisingly most breads etc are dairy free but have soya in them which lots of milk intolerences are linked with.

We use oat milk with added calcium (the red carton, not orange one) - seems to be only Tesco that do it where we are, so we buy the whole box at once!!! Dietician says they don't normally recommend it as main drink but as Murray never had weight gain issues it was fine. He has Neocate which he used to not like at all, so we pureed fruit with it and made it into ice lollies, then later on made smoothies and yesterday (blender broke!!) tried plain neocate and he LOVED it!!!

If you read the allergy labels they are pretty clear so it doesn't take long to find milk free.  We use "Pure" margarine, yellow tub, it is fine for baking too :)
