Sudden gagging with all foods
« on: April 05, 2011, 21:29:04 pm »
DS is just about two and is a fantastic eater. He will literally eat anything and has a great healthy diet. The last couple days anything that he puts in his mouth he gags on and spits out and then won't have it again. It's all food he has tried a million times and he has never had texture issues. He had a cold for a few days over the weekend so maybe that is playing into this? The thing is, he is so hungry! It's like he is on a constant prowl for food but as soon as I give him anything he gags and spits it out. I have let him pick what he eats and we get the same reaction. I am a bit worried as he seems so hungry and his behavior is really taking a beating with this! I can't blame him though; I'm cranky when I'm hungry too!

Help!

If he has a cold do you think he could also have a sore throat? That might explainthe gagging. Is he drinking ok?

I suspect he has enlarged tonsils too sweetie.  Lots of milk shakes, fruit jelly, things that are really easy and dissolvable.

My DS had a double chest and throat infection a while ago and he just stopped eating, period, initially wouldn't even have a milk shake...it's SO worrying.  We gave him a LOT of fruit juice icy poles (pops, I think others call them) as he would drink them and the ice must have helped his throat (he was also on mega antibiotics etc), as soon as he started to feel well the eating came back.

I would visit the doctor honey, hope your LO feels better soon

He is drinking tons. I checked his throat to see if it is red or anything which it isn't but he is just getting over this nasty cough so a sore throat would not surprise me. I haven't tried ice pops so I can try that. I tried a smoothies and he even gagged on that??? I will see if it continues and then maybe take him in. He doesn't have a fever or anything.

My DS was drinking, but no eating honey...I could see his tonsils were red and streaky, but we (read he and I) have enormous tonsils so they are easily viewed.  I would head to the doctors and just get it and his ears checked.  An ear infection can also muck up swallowing/gagging as they are all connected.

Big hugs lovely

Well I took him in and they couldn't find anything. They did a throat swab and it was normal. We came home and he asked for yogurt so I gave him some. He ate it all up, asked for more, ate that andyhen ate 6 strawberries, 8 slices of cheese, half an apple and about a quarter of a cucumber. But he gagged his entire breakfast and didn't I've a bite ::) So apparently he finally decided he was hungry enough to eat!

He is doing it again! WTH? Do you think it could be behavioral? It just makes no sense...

Yes two year molars are coming although there is no sign of them, his behavior suggests otherwise. Do you think that would affect it? It would explain why we have some good days and some bad days...
