Could yoghurt cause long NWs?!
« on: April 07, 2011, 10:31:55 am »
Olly has had a couple of long NWs recently where he has tossed, turned and fidgeted for 2+ hours. Both nights he has had alpro-soya yoghurts and I wonder if it was the sugar causing the NWs??

Has anyone experienced this or am I grasping at straws lol?

I can think of a couple possibilities:

How has he been with other soy products? We don't do soy at all, so I'm not terribly familiar with the products available and how much soy is in them - digestive consequences made themselves apparent with more than trace amounts for us.

If they're sugar-sweetened it might be the sugar. It sounds almost counter-intuitive to give more probiotics with yogurt, but if it's got sugar it may bee feeding systemic candida in his gut, which would give him a tummy-ache.

Hi Claire,
Even though the allergist ruled out any dairy allergies for Jack, I will not give him yogurt at night as it seems to give him a tummy ache as deb has described during the night. Eventually Jack passes gas to ease the discomfort, but overall night sleep is very restless. Not sure about soy yogurts, but it might be similar to regular yogurt?? Never thought about the sugar aspect either.

So overall, I avoid yogurt at night. HTH.

This is the ingredient list;

ingredients
water, hulled soya beans (7.3%), Sugar, (Strawberries (5.7%)), Strawberry concentrate (5.2%), Glucose-fructose syrup, Carrot concentrate, Aronia concentrate, Lime concentrate, Stabiliser (Pectin), Tri-calcium phosphate, Acidity regulators (Lactic acid, Malic acid, Citric acid), Modified maize starch, Flavouring (), Vitamins (B12, D2, Riboflavin), Sea salt, Emulsifier (Lecithin), Yogurt cultures (S. thermophilus, L. bulgaricus), Antioxidants (Ascorbyl palmitate, Tocopherol-rich extract)

We don't do a lot with sy. Trialling it really. He seems OK digestion wise with it though and had a negative result on his allergy test.

Well we thought he was doing OK on soy. He has been having yoghurts for about 6 weeks now. Just happens to have had these 2 bad nights where it doesn't seem to be teething or wind and we are hunting round for a reason!

Are these the same yogurts he's had for 6 weeks or different ones? Does he normally have them at night?

Yes same yoghurts. I think he has had them at night. Said to DH this eve that we must have noticed before but ollyvis such a bad sleeper it is so hard to piece together a pattern. Anyway I am going to remove the yoghurts for a week then introduce half a pot at lunch and see how we go. Got to give it a go!

Those ingredients are mostly additives. Sometimes starches can bind up the tummy, and at least 2 of those products are also corn-derived: the glucose-fructose probably is, and the maize starch. How is he with corn at other times?  Here in the States they add high fructose corn syrup - basically the same as G-F syrup - to EVERYTHING and Josie reacts to it behaviorally, including lousy sleep that night when she's had some.

Are you able to get plain soy yogurt and add maybe some vanilla and/or fruit yourself, and use regular table sugar or maple syrup (we use stevia, actually, no sugar at all, a drop or two is usually enough) to sweeten? See if it works better without the added sugars - that G-F stuff makes it really really sweet. :-\  :P

A lot less extra stuff in there! I'd try that and see if it makes a difference, or alternately give it a miss for a couple of nights and then start back with this. :)
