This is interesting! I can't work out if my dd is low sleep needs or ot and fighting sleep? I'm finding her v difficult to get to bed regardless of the a time. She will only go to sleep really easily if she's not slept since about 11.30am!! I aim to have her asleep by 6pm everynight as that's the only way I can get her to have a 12 hour night as she wakes at 6am regardless. She's all over the place nap wise. She's ready to go back down at around 9/9.30, if I leave her to wake up on her own she will nap for 1.15-1.30 but wake up crying. I could then get her down for 2ish and she would have abou the same length nap again but then prob wouldn't go to bed til 6.30. Today for example she woke at 5.45 went down at 9am, I woke her at 9.30 she went back down at 12.45 then woke crying at 1.45 and then it took me an hour and half to get her to sleep and didn't go to sleep until 7. I can't work out if it's because she doesn't need it or because she's being a monkey and wants rocking??x

I do think its ok to mention the book, her methods are not entirely compatible with BW philospohy so better not discuss  sleep and settling strategies here.   But there is plenty of  fantastic information in that book about managing separation anxiety, sleep needs, eating, feeding solids and understanding your babies behaviour- Author: Sheyne Rowley -  Dream Baby Guide.

I so wish I had this thread a few months ago!!  It would have saved so much of my sanity.  I was banging my head against a wall trying to get Bean to take longer than a 1.20 nap!

Eloys-How long is K's nap right now?

Same here.  I have the same thing going on.  I so hoped she would extend once she got on one nap.  At this point I think both my kids will drop the nap at the same time.  Ry still does more day sleep than she does! He still prefers 2.5-3 hrs and it causes more problems when I start cutting his nap.  So weird how they are so different!

Mine are so different when it comes to sleep. Madison will nap for 3hrs if she could and when I cut her nap, she is so crabby.
Alyssa is my pop tart. Her sleep is very different from her sisters. I think she will be on one nap before she turns one.

Hi,

I can see this is an old post but interested in the definition of low sleep needs and how people have dealt with it. I cannot believe low sleep needs is 13.5-14 per day! My 7.5m baby will only sleep 9.5 hours at night! Always has done. She then needs about 3-3.5 hours naps in the day I think but she generally averages 12-12.5hrs total sleep a day- anything from 10hrs to 14 hours. It is very annoying and been battling with this since birth and especially 2.5months old.

I have tried early bed- we were up at 3.30am
I have been trying wake to sleep this week, hasn't worked (no surprise!)
I have tried pushing all A times- if she's OS and OT and has something to chew she can stay awake 6hrs!
I have tried less A times (can't be less than 2 hrs now) think 3 is about right.

She used to yo-yo in her eating and sleeping requirements, generally crashing out for 14 hours for one day a week, then back to 11.5-12.5hrs again.

I tend to try shorter am nap, long after lunch nap and then short 3rd nap.

Bed at 8 now as wake up before 5.30am is awful.

If she sleeps some 11.5-12 hour days she's ok, if she then sleeps 12.5-13 and catches up on sleep, she cries lots before bed. On the two occasions she slept 11.5 hours a night, she would not sleep before 4 hours A time then it was a short nap (at 6m and 7m)

She has never got sleepy as such, food makes her tired, she sleeps independently when not OS.

I tried without feeding her (as she doesn't seem hungry in the morning these days) to rub her back to get her back to sleep. This used to squeeze 30mins extra out of her but she will absolutely not go back to sleep these days.

She wakes up talking to herself happily, then moans after 10 mins. She often rubs her eyes when awake for a short time, or makes other tired signs after solid breakfast. She tends to eat more when tired, on the rare longer night occasions, I can't get any milk in her in the morning.

Any thoughts on what an earth I can do with these short nights? This is my last ditch attempt, I have posted many times before, can't get her unto a good routine, do not understand her still so will give up after this!

IMO LSN is less than 13 hrs sleep in 24 (in older babies and toddlers) or who need higher A times earlier than usual (so may sleep in longer chunks but can have longer periods awake) I mean the 'charts' tend to say they need between 12-15 hrs in 24 so to me 14 hrs is pretty avge
